1930’s World History

1930’s British History The Great Depression Resulted from the Stock Market Crash of 1929 Intensified by import duties on goods (which meant less trade and hurt transportation industry) Unemployment Rate at 25%! http://i.telegraph.co.uk/multimedia/archive/01963/depression_1963582c.jpg http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/gcsebitesize/history/mwh/britain/depressionrev3.shtml

The Poor and The Rich The Poor The rich The unemployed could not find jobs, were starving, and needed all the necessities of life. Those with jobs were able to purchase many “luxuries” such as washing machines, radios, and cars because prices were so low.

Britain’s Political Leaders British leaders of the 1930’s Winston churchill All of these people were leaders during the 30's King George V King Edward VIII King George VI Prime Minister Ramsay MacDonald Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain On September 3, 1939, the day that Britain declared war on Germany, Churchill was appointed First Lord of the Admiralty and a member of the War Cabinet, and by April, 1940, he became chairman of the Military Coordinating Committee. Later that month, Germany invaded and occupied Norway, which was a setback for Neville Chamberlain, who had resisted Churchill's proposal that Britain pre-empt German aggression by unilaterally occupying vital Norwegian iron mines and sea ports. In May, debate in Parliament on the Norwegian crisis led to a vote of no confidence toward Prime Minister Chamberlain. On May 10, King George VI appointed Churchill as prime minister and Minister of Defense. Within hours, the German Army began its Western Offensive, invading the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg.
