Good advice for summaries and citing How to Research Good advice for summaries and citing

What is Authentic Research? Authentic - worthy of acceptance or belief based on fact. Ex. That is not an authentic Twilight book! Mr. Doyle wrote it himself. Research - investigation or experimentation aimed at the discovery and interpretation of facts. Ex. I am researching Emperor Penguins. I just learned they can’t fly.

What is Authentic Research? Examples of authentic research sources: A book on the topic A professional website (you know who the author is). A government website A museum or library website A newspaper or magazine article

What sources should I use for research? Almost all books are checked for accuracy before they are published. Newspaper and magazine articles are also checked by professional editors to make sure they are correct. Some websites are also checked for accuracy by professionals. It can be difficult to tell sometimes, but the best sites end in .edu and .gov. Use your best judgment. If the website doesn’t look professional, the information probably isn’t either.

So what isn’t Authentic Research? Information that isn’t read by professionals before it’s published is not a good source. Examples: Personal websites, websites with no author, and (gasp!) Wikipedia or Yahoo! Answers. Be careful!! There is a lot of inauthentic research online.

So why not Wikipedia?? Wikipedia is a “user created site”. This means anyone who visits may add information. Anyone means anyone, from a history professor to a student in Hong Kong. Sometimes “moderators” or “professional editors” will view the different sites and make corrections. Sometimes there are serious errors!

But there’s good news! You CAN use Wikipedia…sort of Wikipedia is a great START because You can use the NOTES and EXTERNAL LINKS at the end of the article. Notes – this is where the person got their information from to being with External Links – this is more information about the topic from professional sites!!
