Same Problem, Different Audience Using JMP Dashboards to Identify and Communicate Opportunities for Reducing Length of Stay in Hospitals Mary Ann Shifflet, PhD, Contract Assistant Professor, Romain College of Business, University of Southern Indiana Jane Oppenlander, PhD, Professor, Clarkson University Shirley Shmerling, PhD, Senior Lecturer of Operations and Information Management, Isenberg School of Management, University of Massachusetts Eric Stephens, Manager of Population Health Analytics, Vanderbilt University Medical Center Amy Cohen, PhD, Director of Educational Technology, Harvard School of Public Health   Susan Madden, Associate Director, Case-Based Teaching and Learning Initiative, Harvard School of Public Health

Why use dashboards? Present key information in a way that can be quickly and easily understood Leads to appropriate action Can help drive operational change Not enough analysts to deal with all the data that needs attention

Top BI priorities. Howson, C. (2014). Successful Business Intelligence: Unlock the Value of BI and Big Data (2nd Ed.), McGraw-Hill Education

Three layers of information Monitoring Graphical displays for key performance metrics Analysis Summarized data to find root causes Management Detailed data to identify appropriate action to solve problems Sharda, R., Delen, D. and Turban, E., Business Intelligence and Analytics: Systems for Decision Support, 10th Ed., Pearson, 2015.

Guidelines for creating dashboard displays Less is more Single screen Balance sparsity and density Nothing signifies something Eckerson, W. Performance Dashboards: Measuring, Monitoring, and Managing Your Business, 2nd Ed., Wiley, 2010

Arrange components intelligently Tabs Filters Bread crumbs Text Fonts Eckerson, W. Performance Dashboards: Measuring, Monitoring, and Managing Your Business, 2nd Ed., Wiley, 2010

Guidelines for creating charts for dashboards Less is more Make comparisons easy Use pre-attentive processing Predefine drill paths and interactivity Choose the right graph Eckerson, W. Performance Dashboards: Measuring, Monitoring, and Managing Your Business, 2nd Ed., Wiley, 2010

According to Few “Focus should always be placed on the information itself, not on the design of the dashboard, which should be almost invisible.” Stephen Few, Information Dashboard Design: The Effective Visual Communication of Data (Sebastapol, CA: O‘Reilly Media, 2006), p. 36.

Overview of Dashboard Builder – JMP 13 No longer requires JSL and application builder Easy to use drag and drop interface Predefined templates with maximum flexibility Capabilities include Data access Data shaping and pre-processing Data visualization Statistical Modeling Dashboards Dashboard sharing From www.jmp.com

Data source The dataset in the UC Irvine Machine Learning Repository was created from the Health Facts database satisfied following criteria: Ten years of data: 1999 – 2008 Inpatient encounter (a hospital admission) “Diabetic” encounter – meaning diabetes was entered into the system as a diagnosis, not necessarily that the admission was related to the diabetes itself. The length of stay was at least 1 day and at most 14 days Laboratory tests were performed during the encounter Medications were administered during the encounter

The story We are investigating best practices for treating patients with diabetes while they are hospitalized Our focus is on Time in Hospital (TIH) Reducing TIH reduces opportunities for adverse events, such as falls and infections (especially important for diabetes patients) We won’t actually identify best practices – will identify some places to look for best practices GOAL: Demonstrate JMP tools and communicating results Not solve the TIH problem

Getting started Consider audience What is your story Run analyses and graphics

Combine windows Easiest option Great for data exploration Ideal for classroom demonstrations Similar functionality as dashboard builder

Combine windows

Demo – Dashboard builder templates Lots of choices Pick the one closest to what you need Can add panels

Template Options

Demo 2x1 template Monitor and analyze Time in Hospital Add title Add logo Add tab to view a second demographic Can add data filter

Example of 2x1 with added tab, title, logo

Second tab

Saving and sharing jmpappsource – working file jmpapp – to share Create web report Create add in Interactive HTML

2x1 template with local data filter

Filter + 1 template Full report Summary Report Add panel

Summary/Wrap up Dashboard building with JMP 13 is easy Just because you can doesn’t mean you should Think about what you are trying to communicate Sharing dashboards does not require users to have JMP Lots of interactivity – stay tuned for more in JMP 14! Don’t have to be a power user to take advantage of dashboards
