Paul Klee (pronounced: clay) Flora on Sand, 1927

Artist of the Month – Paul Klee Paul Klee (pronounced "clay"). Born in Switzerland, 1879. His father was a German music teacher and his mother was a Swiss singer. As a child he played the violin and became inspired by visual art as a teenager. Studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. He then traveled all through Italy. Traveled to Paris and was inspired by Cubism and use of color. Klee started to experiment with color and define his own style. In the Style of Kairouan, 1914 One of Klee’s first Abstract Expressionism pieces

Paul Klee’s Style He borrows his style from Cubism, Surrealism and Expressionism Cubism consist of paintings that were made up of cubes, spheres, cylinders, cones, and other geometric shapes. The paintings looked like someone had cut them up and glued them back together. Example: Pablo Picasso Factory, Horta de Ebbo', 1909 Surrealism is a kind of modern art for with images that are based on the world of dreams and fantasy. Example: Salvador Dali  The Persistence of Memory, 1931 Expressionism artists expressed their emotions in their art. In order to express emotion, the art work is often distorted or exaggerated.
