UW Impact: A Brief History of Key Advocacy Messages 2011* STOP THE CUTS, school/degree consolidations! 2012 Stop the cuts 2013* Reinvest 2014 Continue the tuition freeze (reinvest) 2015* Strategic reinvestment, second medical school 2016 Strategic reinvestment * Biennial Budget Session PHELAP 2016 • Harrisburg | University Park, PA

PHELAP 2016 • Harrisburg | University Park, PA Job Security The state of Washington ranks around 48th in per-capita higher education spending (2012). The State Need Grant is underfunded – more than 30,000 eligible students are not receiving aid. Both applications and enrollment continue to rise at the UW – and a growing university will have growing needs. Gimmickry by the State Legislature A tuition cut (good) acts as a cut to university budgets (bad). PHELAP 2016 • Harrisburg | University Park, PA

Engagement Beyond Emergencies Education – in and out of the Legislative session Reminders of our brand and value Purple & Gold Doughnut Day on the Hill Social media Targeting Doctors (med school issue) Computer Science and Engineering graduates (new CSE building) Past advocates vs. all-calls PHELAP 2016 • Harrisburg | University Park, PA

Staying Relevant Amid the Noise Continued Challenge: Staying Relevant Amid the Noise K-12 is underfunded by about $3 billion and the State Supreme Court has ordered action. The UW will launch a multi-billion dollar fundraising campaign – how do we tell our advocates we need more state funding while asking them to fund UW too? An election year highlights hot-button issues. Does higher education seem important in contrast? PHELAP 2016 • Harrisburg | University Park, PA
