Where are we going? A vision for….

Aims Produce a simple strategic statement for the partnership. Explore roles, accountabilities and decision-making requirements. Identify strategic priorities. Scope a high level implementation plan.

Personal Visions Who am I and what is my involvement? What do I want to achieve from this involvement? What are my biggest hopes? What would I like from this group?

“And it ought to be remembered that there is nothing more difficult to take in hand, more perilous to conduct, or more uncertain in its success, then to take the lead in the introduction of a new order of things. Because the innovator has for enemies all those who have done well under the old conditions, and lukewarm defenders in those who may do well under the new.” The Prince, N. Machiavelli. 1515

a “big picture” aspiration for the future What is a vision? an ideal future a “big picture” aspiration for the future sets out the purpose of the partnership reflects the beliefs and values of the partnership is something people can be inspired by and work towards

What is a vision? Imaginable - conveys a picture of what the future will look like Desirable - appeals to the long-term interests of employees, customers, stockholders, and others who have a stake in the enterprise Feasible - comprises realistic, attainable goals Focused - is clear enough to provide guidance in decision making Flexible - is general enough to allow individual initiative and alternative responses in light of changing conditions Communicable - is easy to communicate; can be successfully explained within five minutes

The characteristics of collaboration: purpose and vision Openess to other perspectives is critical to developing a sense of shared purpose and common values. A key step is making priorities and aspirations explicit and understanding those held by partner organisations. If you are clear about why you are collaborating and can reach a common understanding of what a successful outcome looks like you are more likely to achieve it. A shared vision can motivate, inspire and generate energy for action.

“The future is not a place you are going to, it is a place you make” Principal, further education college

“If you want to build a ship, don’t herd people together to collect wood and don’t assign them tasks and work, but rather teach them to long for the endless immensity of the sea.” Antoine de Saint-Exupery

To refresh the world - in mind, body and spirit

your partnership vision...

On a visit to NASA, President John F Kennedy spoke to a man sweeping up in one of the buildings "What's your job here?" asked JFK . "Well, Mr President," said the sweeper, "I'm helping to put a person on the moon."

Create a metaphor to describe this for your group.

Activity: Creating a vision for xxx Step Two: Share metaphors Step Three: 15 minutes Mix up the groups to form three new ones; Merge your metaphors to create a new one AND create the words for your vision

Activity: Creating a vision for xxx Step Four: Share metaphors and vision statements Step Five: Create one vision
