Europe’s Refugee/Migration/Immigration Crisis: Challenges and Reaction Audrey K. Mulliner, Dr. Steven Majstorovic | Department of Political Science The Modern Crisis Conclusion European Union Due to the Syrian civil war and the rise of the Islamic State, millions of individuals have been displaced and are now actively seeking asylum in Western Europe. Because of recent terrorist attacks in Paris and Brussels, there is a growing unease with the influx of migrants as they bring multicultural perspectives, and Europeans are now associating immigration with terrorism. Thus, the purpose of this project is to determine the extent to which multiculturalism and the European Union, including non-members, will either co-exist or disintegrate. It is impossible to determine the extent to which the massive influx of multiculturalism can survive within Europe. Because of the magnitude of this crisis, it is possible that we will see the end of the European Union in our lifetime. However, it may also prove to further unite the Europeans, even to the extent of adding new members. All we can do is wait. Struggling with multiculturalism and assimilation Schengen Zone in tatters Violence from both immigrants and Europeans Right-wing sweeping elections across continent Terrorism in Paris and Brussels Prime Minister Solberg Refugees/Immigrants Norwegian Reactions Not all immigrants are war-torn Syrians. Many are economic immigrants, typically able-bodied males, who use the shadow of the refugees to enter Europe. What’s Next? Prime Minister Solberg (Conservative) in coalition with Progress Party Large amounts of foreign aid Keep the refugees away Forced assimilation (Children) Questionable distribution of immigrants Svalbard Seizure of valuable items Deporting large numbers of immigrants: Committed crimes Lied to the government Cross into Norway from Russia Turkey Wants EU membership Willing to help, but for pay Rise of Turkey? Non-Member States Norway (See Left) Rejected EU membership Maintain independent control over oil and fisheries One of the wealthiest states in the world Generous domestic and foreign aid Acknowledgments Thank you to Dr. Steven Majstorovic for facilitating this project and for encouraging student-faculty research.
