born in october of 1901 in an italian-speaking part of switzerland father was a well-known post-impressionist painter began drawing as a child – started out illustrating fairy tales went to paris, france in 1922 to learn from a popular sculptor
first sculptures were of human heads – mostly modeled after his brother these were close to life size sculptures he studied the human face and drew countless sketches of people
war in france forced giacometti back to switzerland where he made tiny sculptures
when he returned to paris after the war his sculptures became much taller and thinner
in 1916 he was awarded the grand prize for sculpture at the venice biennale which won him global recognition he then had exhibitions around europe and new york.
in 1963 he had an operation for stomach cancer in 1966 he died from a heart attack in switzerland
