Coalition for National Science Funding (CNSF)  www.cnsfweb.org South Carolina THE NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION (NSF) is the only federal agency whose mission includes support for all fields of fundamental science and engineering. BY THE NUMBERS South Carolina in FY 2016 $60 Million: NSF funds awarded 26th: National ranking in NSF funds 19: NSF-funded institutions 164: NSF grants awarded “A big part of what has made the state of South Carolina successful in economic development is our ability to collaborate with other colleges to create the pipeline of talent that industry needs. . . . We appreciate the NSF’s support.” – Dr. James P. Clements, President, Clemson University EXAMPLES OF NSF-FUNDED RESEARCH IN SOUTH CAROLINA Hearts may beat a bit better when researchers from South Carolina’s Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR) remedy ways to keep stem cells alive and growing using carbon nanotubes. South Carolina researchers funded by NSF are studying ways to reduce the loss of life and property following a natural disaster. They use demographic and geographic data collected before and after a disaster to help determine where assistance is most needed for recovering communities. Investigations into how much water is present in fractured rock by Clemson University researchers may provide new technology for oil and gas recovery. Note: The 19 NSF-funded institutions includes INVESTMENT IN SCIENCE = INVESTMENT IN SOUTH CAROLINA 67,300 individuals – 3.6% of South Carolina’s labor force – work in science and engineering occupations.1 Science, engineering, and technology represent 30% of higher education degrees awarded by South Carolina institutions of higher education.1 Doctorates accounted for 3.3% of degrees awarded in science, engineering, and technology in 2013.1 R&D is 1.51% of South Carolina’s GDP. South Carolina received $197 in federal R&D money for each employed worker in 2013; $6,000 for each worker in science or engineering. The state’s businesses spend 0.67 percent of their output on R&D. South Carolina saw the largest increase (23.7%) of any state in federal obligations for university and college science and engineering R&D between FY 2011 and FY 2014.2   1 Science and Engineering Indicators: 2016, NSF 2 Survey of Federal Funds for Research and Development. 2016, NSF Coalition for National Science Funding (CNSF)  www.cnsfweb.org

Coalition for National Science Funding (CNSF)  www.cnsfweb.org South Carolina Since 1952, NSF has supported nearly 50,000 graduate students through research fellowships. South Carolina received $4 million in NSF educational funding in FY 2016. THE NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION (NSF) not only funds cutting-edge research at institutions across the country; NSF’s education initiatives ensure the U.S. will remain a global leader in innovation for generations to come. EXAMPLES OF NSF-FUNDED EDUCATION PROGRAMS IN SOUTH CAROLINA Minority undergraduates at Winthrop University are learning first hand how chemistry affects their everyday life in a program that focuses on science literacy and educational pursuits of higher education. Associations of the students with minority faculty inspire students towards scientific careers and helps to increase diversity in the sciences. Science Quest helps graduate students develop skills in outreach and program development of hands-on projects for ”at-risk” 6th graders on exploring geoscience-related topics. The University of South Carolina researchers leading this program envision opportunities for primary students to learn more about geosciences. Benedict College, a historically black college/university, offers a state-of-the-art engineering laboratory for students to learn how to develop engineering projects from conception to a building a physical design prototype. Students in this program develop teamwork, communication and leadership skills. Courtesy: www.research.gov/seeinnovation “In order to ensure sustainable development of the state’s innovation capacity, South Carolina must continue to prioritize improvements in K-12 education, STEM higher education, and the South Carolina Research Enterprise.” -- South Carolina Innovation Plan: Recommendations for Accelerating the Knowledge Economy in the Palmetto State, South Carolina Department of Commerce “As BMW’s outreach partners, South Carolina colleges and universities play an important part of BMW’s recruiting efforts. They have the potential to help significantly grow and develop our future workforce.” -- Johannes Trauth, Vice President of Human Resources, BMW Manufacturing Company Coalition for National Science Funding (CNSF)  www.cnsfweb.org
