Journeys Core Reading Program Research-based, systematic instruction Consistent curriculum grades K through 5 Focuses on 5 Big Ideas in Reading: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension (National Reading Panel, 2000) Cohesive program also includes reading, writing, word study, vocabulary, spelling, grammar, and handwriting

Journeys Core Reading Program Balanced Literacy Approach: gradual release of responsibility to include whole group(modeling), small group(guided practice), and independent reading and writing Small Group Guided Reading using leveled readers by Fountas and Pinnell Technology for 21st century instruction

Reading and Writing Program organization and components are the same Kindergarten through 5th Grade Spiraling curriculum throughout all grades Cohesive instruction focusing on a “Target Strategy and a Target Skill” in every lesson Integrates technology and digital resources Includes formal and informal assessment Every writing lesson focuses on both the form and traits of writing
