What you need to know for NCH HIPPA/OSHA What you need to know for NCH

What does HIPPA stand for? When was HIPPA created? Involves privacy to all patients, and security for electronic billing. Increases patient rights Provider responsibilities Re: health care info

Benefits: Reduces inappropriate use of and the disclosure of information. Patients learn of their rights. Includes Disclosure Rights (who get the info) Must have a signed authorization

SN – How Does This Affect You? Be careful of who you give info to. Never assume it is the parent or legal guardian in the child’s room or on the phone. Ask who you are speaking to and identify carefully visitors in patient rooms. Don’t look up info on computers

Your Role in HIPPA Use info carefully. Verify the identity of any person seeking info. Report any violations to instructor or compliance officer. Be sure to shred old worksheets No printing of any patient information.

HIPPA Violations Doctor - suspended for two weeks and completed further HIPPA training. Unit secretary - fired.

Protected Info Name Diagnosis Social Security Number Includes the following: Name Diagnosis Social Security Number (including pictures) Dates of Service Test Results License Number Meds Birthday

Who gets the info? Parents/Legal Guardians NCH it is complicated Use of Code Word Be extra careful - so many visitors (aunts, uncles, siblings, grandparents)

Your Role Never share your password/log off Be careful in casual conversations All policies are on intranet

Is It Reasonable? It helps us get our work done and protects patients but it has it’s disadvantages. Disabled Long distance Caring neighbors, etc Be sure to refer to parents for info.

Occupational Safety and Health Administration Formed in 1970’s to protect employees in the work place.

No eating, drinking, or applying cosmetics (even chapstick) in patient care areas. Includes nurses station, hallways, etc No artificial nails, including gel nails No painted nails

Protective gear in patient rooms. Wear gloves always Report all blood/body fluid spills Infection Control Signs outside patient rooms-contact, droplet, etc Red bags for infectious waste

Handwashing The best way to prevent infection How long? Use gel or soap At NCH it is a must! Gel in/Gel out EVERY time: Between procedures No gloves on computers

NO SMOKING This is a no brainer for most of us, but NCH allows no smoking anywhere on campus. Mt Carmel SN’s
