How significant was the role of the church in medieval medicine? Watch the following clip What does it suggest about medieval attitudes to disease? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jarJYPxV26w

Lesson Objectives To identify the ways in which the church helped people who were ill To evaluation the extent to which the Medieval Church ‘cared’ for the rather than ‘cured’ them

Your Task! Did Medieval hospitals actually help the sick? Research the following: How did the Church help care for the sick? How did the Church hinder medical progress? What supernatural methods did the Church use? White books P72 – 73 Information packs

Write a two sided argument P1 – Evidence that the Church helped sick people P2 – Evidence that the Church just cared for them, (and hindered medical progress) P3 – Conclusion – over all, did the Medieval help or hinder medical progress? Why? What is your strongest evidence?

Peer mark each others answers? How strong is the argument? How clear are the points? Have they argued both sides? How can they improve? What has gone well?
