Backup, Archive & Recovery (aka EZ-Backup) Laurie Collinsworth 20-Sep-2016

Agenda Introductions Service Description Value Proposition Metrics Cost Security More Information Q&A

Introductions Service owner: Laurie Collinsworth Service manager: Robert Talda Other service delivery team members: David Beardsley Paul Zarnowski Ross Boyer Other Service Help Desk staff

Service Description Service name: Backup, Archive & Recovery (aka EZ-Backup) Product(s): IBM Spectrum Protect aka, Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM), (ADSM) Brief text description: Fee-based, automated, remote backup/archive/storage service that will automatically back up your workstation or server files, and allow you to restore them yourself. Available to: Faculty, Staff Fee? Yes Service tier: One

Service Description - Continued The service is capable of handling a very wide range of data protection and archive requirements, to protect a wide variety of data types using a single, leveraged solution, including: Workstation files Server files File servers (including Shared File Service) Databases VMware servers Exchange servers (including non-CIT) Et. Al.

Service Description - Continued The service can also be used to archive data for longer-term storage. This is different than backup, which is used for data protection. A second, off-site copy of all data stored via the service is maintained at the WCM data center in NYC. The service is used to facilitate the Electronic Discovery process for active litigation cases.

Value Proposition Protects against loss of data due to a variety of causes: User error – restoring a prior version of a file Software / system error – restoring prior to corruption Hardware failure Site failure – backup data is stored in 2 separated locations Theft Malware (e.g., viruses, ransomware, etc) Loss of data can result in: Financial Loss Productivity Loss Reputational Harm Protects against data loss due to a variety of causes (listed)

Value Proposition - Customer impact Backups are automated; no need to remember to do them Users with admin access can restore files by themselves Backups can be tailored to meet a variety of needs Archive feature provides for archival of files on easily accessible media (no manual intervention required) Backups are automated, so you don’t have to remember to do them. A backup is only useful if it’s there to restore from! Users can restore files themselves, using a GUI or CLI, but support is available for those who need help. Backups can be tailored to meet almost any need. The Spectrum Protect software is very flexible.

Value Proposition – Key benefits Risk mitigation Economies of scale Automated monitoring Storage life-cycle migration Users need not be concerned whether their data is stored on disk, tape, or in the cloud Data is transparently moved between generations of storage 2-site protection; geographically distant locations Mitigates the risks mentioned before. The more a centrally supported service is used, the better are the economies of scale. Automated monitoring is in place to notify you if there is a potential problem with your backups. You don’t need to worry what storage your data resides on. The service takes care of migrating data from older generations of storage to newer generations, without the end user needing to be aware of this. Data is stored at 2 geographically distant locations, to protect against a site-catastrophe.
