O worship the King All glorious above And gratefully sing His wonderful love

Our Shield and Defender The Ancient of Days Pavilioned in splendor And girded with praise

O tell of His might O sing of His grace Whose robe is the light Whose canopy space

The deep thunderclouds form On the wings of the storm His chariots of wrath The deep thunderclouds form And dark is His path On the wings of the storm

Thy bountiful care What tongue can recite It breathes in the air It shines in the light

It streams from the hills It descends to the plain And sweetly distills In the dew and the rain

Frail children of dust And feeble as frail In Thee do we trust Nor find Thee to fail

Thy mercies how tender How firm to the end Our Maker Defender Redeemer and Friend CCLI #606984

For the Cause

For the cause of Christ the King We give our lives, an offering ‘til all the earth resounds With ceaseless praise To the Son

For the cause of Christ we go With joy to reap, with faith to sow As many see And many put their trust in the Son

The Name above every name: Christ we proclaim, The Name above every name: For all creation, Ev’ry nation, God’s salvation Through the Son!

For the King once lifted high To cries of rage, of ‘crucify!’ Endured the cross As every sin was laid On the Son

To the King who conquered death To free the poor and the oppressed For lasting peace For life and liberty In the Son

The Name above every name: Christ we proclaim, The Name above every name: For all creation, Ev’ry nation, God’s salvation Through the Son!

Let it be my life’s refrain: To live is Christ, to die is gain; Deny myself, take up my cross And follow the Son

We Give Our Tithes and Offerings

J o n a h 3 Now the word of the Lord came to Jonah the second time, saying, 2 “Arise, go to Nineveh the great city and proclaim to it the proclamation which I am going to tell you.” 3 So Jonah arose and went to Nineveh according to the word of the Lord. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly great city, a three days’ walk.

J o n a h 3 4 Then Jonah began to go through the city one day’s walk; and he cried out and said, “Yet forty days and Nineveh will be overthrown.” 5 Then the people of Nineveh believed in God; and they called a fast and put on sackcloth from the greatest to the least of them.

J o n a h 3 6 When the word reached the king of Nineveh, he arose from his throne, laid aside his robe from him, covered himself with sackcloth and sat on the ashes. 7 He issued a proclamation and it said, “In Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles: Do not let man, beast, herd, or flock taste a thing. Do not let them eat or drink water.

J o n a h 3 8 But both man and beast must be covered with sackcloth; and let men call on God earnestly that each may turn from his wicked way and from the violence which is in his hands. 9 Who knows, God may turn and relent and withdraw His burning anger so that we will not perish.”

J o n a h 3 10 When God saw their deeds, that they turned from their wicked way, then God relented concerning the calamity which He had declared He would bring upon them. And He did not do it.

new life He has given us: Rescued from Death To glorify God with the new life He has given us:

A Second Chance and the Gospel’s Advance 1. We must understand God’s second chance is for His gospel’s advance (1–3).

A Second Chance and the Gospel’s Advance Philip Cary writes, “It all starts again, just as before, with the very same words we read at the beginning except for the added phrase reminding us it is the second time.” (105).

A Second Chance and the Gospel’s Advance Aren’t you glad God is the God of the second chance?

A Second Chance and the Gospel’s Advance We are the community of those who have received God’s Word, and there is no salvation apart from God revealing Himself to us in His Word. God’s Word creates the church and is given to the church for the extension of the church until there is nothing but the church.

A Second Chance and the Gospel’s Advance “Missions exists because worship doesn’t.” -John Piper

A Second Chance and the Gospel’s Advance We’ve been saved for mission because the God we worship is worthy of the worship of all peoples – even our enemies.

A Second Chance and the Gospel’s Advance 2. We must value God’s mission as God does (3).

A Second Chance and the Gospel’s Advance “Now Nineveh was a great city to God (3).”

A Second Chance and the Gospel’s Advance This is more than a reference to Nineveh’s size. “It also suggests Nineveh is somehow a big thing in God's eyes, something that matters a great deal to Him” (Cary, 127).

A Second Chance and the Gospel’s Advance “‘As I live!’ declares the Lord God, ‘I take no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but rather that the wicked turn from his way and live.” (Ezek 33:11)

A Second Chance and the Gospel’s Advance 3. We must share God’s message with our enemies (4).

A Second Chance and the Gospel’s Advance Overthrow (4) “can mean not only to overthrow and destroy as it did at Sodom and Gomorrah but also to turn over, turn around, or turn one thing into another as it does when . . .God turns Balaam’s curse against Israel into blessing” (Cary, 109).

A Second Chance and the Gospel’s Advance “The use of the word (overthrow) here is hardly accidental. Although Nineveh was not overturned, it did experience a turn around” (Alexander, 134).

A Second Chance and the Gospel’s Advance Though Jonah reluctantly shares the message, he nevertheless preaches the gospel. And, he tells this story on himself so we might learn from his reluctance that we must share God’s message with our enemies.

A Second Chance and the Gospel’s Advance 4. We must hope our enemies will truly repent and receive God’s mercy (5–10).

A Second Chance and the Gospel’s Advance “The people of Nineveh believed in God.” (5)

A Second Chance and the Gospel’s Advance “The Hebrew idiom for ‘believe in’ denotes more. . .than just believing what someone has said; it expresses the idea of trusting a person.” (Alexander, 134).

A Second Chance and the Gospel’s Advance In verse 10, when we read that God relented or repented of his burning anger, we should not think God has changed His mind. Jonah is writing of God’s activity from man’s perspective.

A Second Chance and the Gospel’s Advance “The instant I speak concerning a nation and concerning a kingdom, to pluck up, to pull down, and to destroy, if that nation against whom I have spoken turns from its evil, I will relent of the disaster that I thought to bring upon it” (Jer 18:7–8).

A Second Chance and the Gospel’s Advance “The explanation for the apparent change of mind is the unchanging character of God” (Cary, 123).

Three Truths about True Repentance Repentance begins with an earnest call to God. Repentance is accompanied by evidences of humility. Repentance is the responsibility of everyone.

A Second Chance and the Gospel’s Advance And He did not do it. (10)

Our Time of Response

Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus

No light in the darkness you see? O soul, are you weary And troubled? No light in the darkness you see? There's light for a look At the Savior, And life more abundant And free!

Turn your eyes upon Jesus, Look full in His wonderful face, And the things of earth Will grow strangely dim In the light of His glory and grace.

Thro' death into life everlasting For more than conquerors He passed, and We follow Him there; Over us sin no more Hath dominion For more than conquerors We are!

Turn your eyes upon Jesus, Look full in His wonderful face, And the things of earth Will grow strangely dim In the light of His glory and grace.

His word shall not fail you He promised; Believe Him, And all will be well; Then go to a world that is dying, His perfect salvation to tell!

Turn your eyes upon Jesus, Look full in His wonderful face, And the things of earth Will grow strangely dim In the light of His glory and grace.
