Conclusions and perspectives Designing an environmental cell for the adhesion characterization by force spectroscopy B. Manship1,2,3, F. Ferry1,2,3, C. Roux4,5, M. Terrien1,2,3, C. Sillard1,2,3,F. Dubreuil4,5, R. Passas1,2,3 Introduction Specifications Papers are built on cellulosic fibers which are hygroscopic material. The force of adhesion and the work of adhesion between two cellulosic oligomers are depending on their level of humidity. To manage force spectroscopy by AFM under controlled humidity, a setup has to be developed. An environmental chamber was built and could be mounted on the AFM platform. Experiments at varying humidity can be performed through the use of an air generator. Air flow: - Processing temperature = room temperature - Relative Humidity regulation : 20% – 80% - Flow rate control to avoid tip vibration Environmental cell: - Height => compatible with the AFM configuration - Air flow circulation => no induced movement of the sample Other: - Transportable system Air generator Environmental cell Setup Humidity generation unit PC unit Outlet Sample Optical camera AFM piezo head Evaporation skirt Air flow inlet Liquid cell Humidity measurement Flow rate measurement Air flow circulation Inlet Conclusions and perspectives The setup is now operational. First results shows that there is no influence of the air flow on the spring constant of the AFM’s tip. The impact of the flow rate on the adhesion force and on the work of adhesion is under evaluation.
