Outline  Small satellites (CubeSat) overview kufaSat  Small satellites (CubeSat) overview  Our project - the KufaSat nanosatellite  What we need Al-Furat Al-Awsat Technical University Mohammed Chessab Mahdi

CubeSat Overview : Definition kufaSat A CubeSat (U-class spacecraft) is a type of miniaturized satellite for space research that usually : has a volume of exactly one liter (cubic with 10 cm on all sides), has a mass of no more than 1.33 kilograms, uses commercial off-the-shelf components for its electronics. Al-Furat Al-Awsat Technical University Mohammed Chessab Mahdi

CubeSat Overview : Standard Size kufaSat The standard 10×10×10 cm basic CubeSat is often called a "one unit" or "1U" CubeSat. CubeSats are scalable along only one axis, by 1U increments. CubeSats such as a "2U" CubeSat (20×10×10 cm) and a "3U" CubeSat (30×10×10 cm) have been both built and launched. Al-Furat Al-Awsat Technical University Mohammed Chessab Mahdi

CubeSat Overview : History kufaSat Beginning in 1999, California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly) & Stanford University developed the CubeSat specifications to promote and develop the skills necessary for the design, manufacturing, and testing of small satellites intended for low Earth orbit (LEO) that perform a number of scientific research and explore new space technologies. The first CubeSats were launched in June 2003 on a Russian Eurockot. Approximately 75 CubeSats had been placed into orbit by 2012. The bulk of development and launches comes from academia, several companies build CubeSats such as large-satellite-maker Boeing, and several small companies. The CubeSat format is also popular with amateur radio satellite builders. Al-Furat Al-Awsat Technical University Mohammed Chessab Mahdi

Constraints in Construction: kufaSat • Each single CubeSat may not exceed 1.3 kg mass. • Center of mass must be within 2 cm of its geometric center. • Double and triple configurations are possible. • Compatibility with p-pod. • Aluminum 7075 or 6061 is suggested for the main structure . • Deactivation of all electronics during launch to prevent any electrical or RF interference with the launch vehicle and primary payloads. • Deployment of antennas 15 minutes after ejection from the P-POD (as detected by CubeSat deployment switches). • Providing documentation of proper licenses for use of frequencies. This requires proof of frequency coordination by the International Amateur Radio Union (IARU). Al-Furat Al-Awsat Technical University Mohammed Chessab Mahdi

CubeSats are often launched in groups from dedicated launchers as Launching facility: kufaSat CubeSats are often launched in groups from dedicated launchers as secondary payloads on a rocket. The CubeSat design specification is proposed by Stanford and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo universities. The primary responsibility of Cal Poly is to act as a launch coordinator and to ensure the safety of the Cubesats and protect the launch vehicle (LV), primary payload, and other Cubesats. Cubesats are usually ejected from a P-POD launcher. Al-Furat Al-Awsat Technical University Mohammed Chessab Mahdi
