“Watch Dogs” and “Den Moms” Volunteers Utilizing volunteers within a class

What is Watch Dogs? WATCH D.O.G.S.®, a K-12 program, invites fathers, grandfathers, uncles, or other father figures to volunteer at least one day all day at their child’s/student's school during the school year. Program Goals 1) To provide positive male role models for the students, demonstrating by their presence that education is important. 2) To provide extra sets of eyes and ears to enhance school security and reduce bullying

“Den Moms” Den Moms: To provide an opportunity to include Mothers or positive female role-models in their student’s education. The goal is to volunteer at least one day a school year. Program Goals 1) To provide positive male role models for the students, demonstrating by their presence that education is important. 2) To provide extra sets of eyes and ears to enhance school security and reduce bullying

Before you get to the class…. Watch Dog/Den Mom Volunteer will check in with the Main Office… They will Sign-in and are provided with a binder that includes: A letter of introduction Gotchas and lunch ticket They will be given a schedule and a student will tour them through the building to show them each of their classes. They will be wearing a Watch Dogs/Den Moms shirt and name tag to identify them.

Greeting Teacher will welcome you. Provide you with an agenda of what the class will look like for the day. Brief summary of any specific expectations/safety procedures (ex. in science if you are doing a lab) Let you know what students are currently doing and how they can help/be involved. Encourage you to ask you questions (it is better for them to know what you want communicated to students)

Tasks that are good for you as a Watchdog/Den Mom Assisting students with reading/identifying tasks through reading directions. Helping students with work. Modeling a behavior (ex. Reading out loud along with students –give the volunteer a heads up on this to see if they are comfortable with this) Reinforcing your expectations – (ex. You give a direction to students and they help you monitor students are doing it). Providing positive reinforcement to students (ex. Rewards, gotchas, etc). Helping students that are behind on work to catch up on assignments. Helping a specific student that usually needs 1 on 1 support to stay on task.

Positives of Watch Dog/Den Mom Volunteers You bring a community presence into a classroom. Potentially bring a non-education perspective to content being taught. Positive role-model for students Potential for mentoring at-risk students

Other Tasks for Watch Dogs/Den Moms Supervising Halls, Lunches, Student Choice Activities Assisting in the Library Assisting with progress monitoring Supervising End of Quarter Rewards, Seal Activity, and other activities.

End of the Day As a Watch Dog/Den Mom Volunteer, you will check out through the office. Watchdogs are asked to do an exit survey to reflect on their day and provide us with feedback to improve the program. (Den Moms this eventually will be a request but the survey is not yet completed). You will also have the ability to schedule another opportunity to volunteer if you wish.

Other Volunteer Opportunities Mentors – depending on experience, volunteer interest and school need. We have come Watchdogs become mentors to specific students. AVID Tutor – This requires some additional training from our AVID elective teacher and consistency. AVID Tutors need to be available 6th period (approx. 2:50-3:50PM) on Tuesdays and Thursdays every week once AVID Tutorials begin.
