MENTORING and Signoff for New OEC Instructors The mentoring process is detailed in the NSP Mentoring Manual. We have been using the following outline for OCE Instructors. 1.       Develop 3 lesson plans for OEC Topics in NSP 6 Pack Format 2.       Mentor reviews all NSP Procedures for opening, teaching and closing a course with the mentee. Demonstrates on-line system 3.       Mentor reviews all NSP and Brady tools available to aid in teaching class with the mentee 4.       Mentor reviews NSP OEC Requirements and best practices for teaching an OEC Class with the mentee 5.       Present these three topics to the mentor and other instructors to gain teaching experience 6.       Assist the mentor (or other instructor) present a topic to a class or OEC Students. The mentee will present a portion of the topic including developing a 6 pack. 7.       When ready, mentee teaches one (or more) full lesson to and OEC Class including a developing 6 pack lesson plans 8.       When candidate is ready, a.       Mentor assembles all six packs, teaching evaluations and other notes for IT b.       IT observes candidate in one (or more) class sessions. 9.       When Candidate, Mentor and IT agree, candidate is promoted to OEC Instructor. a.       All documentation and forms submitted to ROA

Northern Michigan Region: Instructor Continuing Education Clinic OEC INSTRUCTOR Job Description

Northern Michigan Region: Instructor Continuing Education Clinic Qualifications Is a current NSP member, Alumni Association member, member of an NSP-approved affiliated organization or Associate. Successfully completes the OEC course. Successfully completes the Instructor Development course. Successfully completes the OEC Mentoring phase of Instructor Development.

Northern Michigan Region: Instructor Continuing Education Clinic Appointment Submits an instructor application Completes mentoring phase for OEC At least teaches 3 OEC classes in presence of Mentor Evaluation and final approval by an Instructor Trainer. Approved by ROA and application submitted to Division OEC Supervisor

Continuing Certification Northern Michigan Region: Instructor Continuing Education Clinic Continuing Certification Attends Region recertification clinic once every three years. Completes all OEC annual refresher requirements Is evaluated by an OEC IT while giving an OEC class at least once in 3 years

Central Division OEC Fall 2014 Responsibilities Teaching: OEC courses, OEC continuing education/refreshers. Teaches current OEC materials as defined by NSP Maintains relationship with assigned an IT/ROA Quality management/assurance

Facilitates all aspects of the class for students Facilitates the mentoring relationship with instructors & trainees and the IT assigned to the class for QA

OEC INSTRUCTOR TRAINER Northern Michigan Region: Instructor Continuing Education Clinic OEC INSTRUCTOR TRAINER Instructor Trainers (IT) are appointed/recommended by ROA/RD based on need and reviewed by the Division Program Supervisor annually. It is a job, not an award. The national ratio recommendation is one instructor trainer to 10 instructors. Reports to the Region OEC Administrator or directly to the Division OEC Supervisor

Northern Michigan Region: Instructor Continuing Education Clinic Qualifications Is a current NSP member, Associate, Alumni, or member of an NSP-approved affiliate organization. Is a current certified OEC instructor. Demonstrates expertise in the areas of teaching techniques and supervising a quality management program. Displays excellent knowledge and performance competence Completes all prescribed training, continuing education, and evaluation programs. Demonstrates effective organization, administration, communication, observation, and evaluation skills.

Northern Michigan Region: Instructor Continuing Education Clinic Responsibilities Training and quality management (QA if courses) Receives the test materials for OEC from NSP for the OEC class assigned and coordinates with IOR. Provides final course closure in coordination with IOR on nsp.org Trains, certifies, evaluates, and recommends recertification of OEC instructors. Establishes individual mentoring relationships with Region instructors. Works with Region OEC administrator and the Division OEC supervisor Provides evaluation of individual instructors Maintains instructor credentials, helps to provide continuing education/ training clinics

Division/Region Policy for ITs Northern Michigan Region: Instructor Continuing Education Clinic Division/Region Policy for ITs IT for class should be assigned in coordination with the ROA An IT may not serve as the IT and IOR for the same course. An IT for a course should not be from the same patrol as the IOR.

Northern Michigan Region: Instructor Continuing Education Clinic Qualifications Is a current NSP member or Associate. Is a certified discipline-specific instructor. Possesses abilities in communication and has a desire for continuous improvement of instruction for the Region

Northern Michigan Region: Instructor Continuing Education Clinic Selection Is appointed on an as-needed basis by the Division Supervisor, Region Administrator, or IT

Northern Michigan Region: Instructor Continuing Education Clinic Responsibilities Mentoring and coaching Establishes mentoring relationships with assigned instructor trainees. Provides assessment and determines instructor trainee’s readiness to teach in a specific discipline.

Northern Michigan Region: Instructor Continuing Education Clinic Administration Maintains records of meetings and observation assessments. For OEC a mentoring form should be completed over time with the trainee Recommends instructor trainee for Instructor Trainer observation/evaluation and potential certification.

REGION OEC ADMINISTRATOR Northern Michigan Region: Instructor Continuing Education Clinic REGION OEC ADMINISTRATOR Job Description

Northern Michigan Region: Instructor Continuing Education Clinic Qualifications Is a current NSP member. Interested in OEC administration and quality. Has the ability to organize programs and to work with others. Is an OEC Instructor Trainer or qualified to be one. Is appointed by the Division OEC supervisor with input from the RD or DD.

Northern Michigan Region: Instructor Continuing Education Clinic Responsibilities Program promotion, delivery & QA Communication with everyone for OEC implementation and delivery. Works with OEC ITs to coordinate OEC instructor continuing education. Delivers and supports instructor continuing education clinics (required for instructors every three years). Promotes, delivers, or supports Senior OEC clinics

Northern Michigan Region: Instructor Continuing Education Clinic Responsibilities Works with Division OEC Supervisor, Instructor Trainers, and OEC Instructors in developing, recruiting, training, and evaluating instructors and establishing a quality management program. Establishes a distribution method of course and refresher schedules, if applicable.

Northern Michigan Region: Instructor Continuing Education Clinic Administrative Implements training programs Handles other NSP duties as may be assigned. Maintains such records as required by division, region, section, or patrol. Quality Assurance (QA)
