Theme: How the theme is represented in the story FRIENDSHIP- TRUST- Katniss lack of trust for Peeta Peeta trusting Katniss Katniss trusting Gale Rue & Katniss trusting one another Katniss & Peeta trusting Haymitch Katniss not being able to trust that her mother would take care of Prim

Theme: How is the theme of DESENSITIZATION portrayed in the story? With your group….list the ways in which Desensitization is portrayed in the novel? How are citizens, tributes, and people of the Capitol are made less sensitive to what’s going on around them? How/why are characters less likely to feel shock or distress at scenes of cruelty, violence, or suffering by overexposure? Give examples from the text. GO DIGGING IN YOUR TEXT!

Desensitization The Hunger Games event – children being forced to kill one another, often brutal, violent ways while being televised. The Capitol audience member treating the district tributes as entertainers rather than real people. The overall desensitization that the Capitol people have when someone was killed (not that it was brutal event, but where they were when it happened). The desensitization of the tributes who try not to get too close/personal to one another since they will have to kill them eventually.

Theme- How is the theme INHUMANITY portrayed in the novel? To what extent is Katniss and the other characters in the text prepared to commit inhumane acts to increase their chances of survival? How do these decisions effect or change them? How much guilt does Katniss feel over these decisions and is the guilt justifiable?

Inhumanity- EXAMPLES: Capitol punishing citizens with the Hunger Games Working conditions in districts (especially 11, as described by Rue) District 11Peacekeepers Avox- She appears to feel more guilty over the Avox girl than over killing anyone in the arena. Also, killing 'evil' people seems easier than killing less evil ones (e.g. Cato vs. Thresh).

Chapter 25 - Summary What was chasing Cato? What qualities make muttations unnatural Make a decision…Kill Cato or save Peeta from the wolves? Who does she decide? How does Cato die? They won….or so they thought! How did the Gamemakers change the rules (AGAIN)? Katniss thinks Peeta is pulling a knife to kill her, she points her arrow at his heart. In reality, what was he doing? What plan does Katniss form so they both can win? What would happen in the districts if there was NO winner of the games? Announcement is made.

Chapter 26- Summary Announced winners and taken by ______________ to be patched up? When do Katniss and Peeta FINALLY get to see one another? Why have Katniss’s actions in the Games mocked the Capitol? What is her fear? Katniss also knows that she has to play along with the star- crossed lovers theme forever and she’s not sure she can do it. Why? Thoughts of…

Chapter 27 - Summary Interview with Caeser Flickerman: What or who is Katniss trying to convince now? (or else they will kill/punish her for showing them up) Katniss is convincing on stage, but… What does Peeta realize on the train before they reach District 12? What is his reaction? How does Katniss feel?

"In punishment for the uprising, each of the twelve districts must provide one girl and one boy, call tributes, to participate,” (Collins 18).

Symbolism- Number 13 "Then came the Dark Days, the uprising of the districts against the Capitol. Twelve were defeated, the thirteenth obliterated," (Collins 31). Unlucky number! (Think….Friday the 13th) Baker’s dozen 13 Colonies
