Density
What is density? Density- the amount of mass for each cm^3 (or mL) of a substance. Density=mass/volume
What is density? When an object is placed in a fluid, gravity pulls the object down. In order for the object to go down (sink), the fluid must move out of the way.

Lab: Density Towers Where do you predict the liquids will be located? Label in your notebook 1-9 with 1 being the top and 9 being the bottom. Honey dish soap Water corn syrup maple syrup vegetable oil rubbing alcohol Milk lamp oil
Lab: Density Towers Write the correct order of the liquids. Where do you think that the items will land? Metal nut or bolt Popcorn kernel Board game Die Plastic bead Soda cap Ping pong ball
Lab: Density Towers Answer this question in your science notebook: What makes some objects sink deeper into the column while some hardly sink at all?
What is density? If the fluid was more dense then the object, the object would stop sinking and would float. Buoyancy- is the resistance to sinking. This is when the fluid that is being pushed out of the way pushes back on the object.
What is density? Buoyancy depends on density. So if you change the mass or volume of an object, you can change whether or not it will float. Many fluids also have a property called surface tension.
What is density? Surface tension- a property of a liquid caused by intermolecular forces near the surface leading to the apparent presence of a surface film.

Water drops on a coin Which coin held the most water? Why? Why does a dome form when you drop water on the coin? Why does the dome eventually collapse?
