He was born in New York to one of the Deutsch families which have settled in America in the 17th century. He was 18 when he entered Harvard University and he spent 4 years there. After Roosevelt left the university he studied in Germany for almost a year. Then he got right into politics. He was elected to the Assembly of New York.
