Critical Components of the Role Develop Through Your Work – Sample Assignment Instructions: This template is designed to help employees think creatively about a particular job, task, or assignment to identify skills to target for development through their work. This not only helps employees take a principled approach to their own development, but can also help articulate a case for personal progress to managers. Use the example below to help you fill out the blank template on the following page. Task #1: Serving as a Mentor to a New Member of the Team Critical Components of the Role Development Area(s) Creating a checklist for the new team member letting him/her know what to do first Process Management Communicating how things “really work” to the new team member Communication Helping the new team member learn a new skill or process Coaching Task #2: Managing a Project Scoping out the project and building a business case Business Acumen Creating a project plan Project Management Holding others on the team accountable for reaching project milestones on time People Management Presenting results to others on the team, other business units, or senior leaders
