September 30, 2016 Important Dates Reminders Language Arts During language arts block, we have been continuing to learn about what schools were like long ago, comparing them to our school today! We also compared play long ago to play today. We learned about photo essays and the students made their own photo essays which were turned into a class book! We continued with the comprehension strategy, asking questions, and learned what a text-world connection was. Science In science, sadly our Solar System unit is coming to an end. This week we learned about the outer and inner planets and will be wrapping up on Tuesday, starting our weather unit Thursday! Word Study We moved on to the short /o/ vowel this week. We practiced adding and taking away letters to form new words with the short /o/ sound. The students also played a lot of fun short /o/ phonics games this week and learned words from the –ock word family. We added new words to our word wall, please practice these at home. Alternates for the week: Donations! If you have any games at home that you would like to get rid of or happen to be throwing out, feel free to donate them to our classroom! These are games that can be played during indoor recess and will especially be helpful as it starts to get colder. If it’s an educational game, even better!  Writer’s Notebook Next week we will be starting Writer’s Workshop in our writer’s notebooks. This is a notebook the students will be writing in all year. Please have your child choose items at home that he/she would like to use to decorate the notebook. It can be things like pictures, stickers, scrapbook paper, fancy tape etc. Anything decorative for a notebook, please send it in! We will be decorating Friday, so please have your child bring stuff in by Friday, Oct. 7. Update: Please refer to my Devon Elementary teacher page often as I will be putting extra resources on there and these weekly newsletters. You will also find information about our class there. (http://tesd.net/Domain/1465 ) Math We are nearing the end of Chapter 3: Addition Facts to 10. We learned basic facts to 10 and challenged ourselves up to 20, made addition stories, and solved real-world addition problems. We also continued working on different addition strategies such as counting on, using ten frames, number bonds and number lines, and drawing pictures. Next week, we will start Chapter 2: Number Bonds. At the beginning of each new chapter I will be sending home the home/school connections. These are optional. It’s up to you if you’d like your child to complete the worksheet. I will be more than happy to look over it, however it is your choice and not mandatory by me.
