Electromagnetic Motors Here is one way to make a simple motor: Wrap the rubber band lengthwise around the battery. Insert a safety pin between each end of the battery and the rubber band. The end of the safety pin that opens should be inserted. Make a loop of wire by wrapping it around your finger 10-15 times. Wrap the ends of the wire around the loop to keep it from unraveling. Be sure to leave extra wire on each end of your loop. On one end of your wire, sand all sides. On the other end of your wire, sand ONLY ONE SIDE. Place the ends of your wire loop through the holes of the safety pins. Place a magnet underneath your wire loop and give your loop a small push. Watch it go! Place a piece of black tape around your loop. Tape a small square of reflective tape on one side of your loop. Point the measuring gun (Digital Tachometer) at your loop, give it a push, and press the TEST button. This will tell you how many revolutions per minute the motor makes. HOW DOES IT WORK? - - + + The MAGNETIC FIELD from the loop of wire repels the MAGNETIC FIELD from the magnet and makes the loop SPIN. The CURRENT from the battery creates a MAGNETIC FIELD through the loop of wire.
