Bell ringer Complete questions #1 & 2 on the Interpreting Graphs WS Have your good graph out to show me its done. Announcements: We are in the Library West Computer Lab tomorrow.

Big Question How well does Gatorade (sports drink) really supply our bodies with what they need to recover from extreme exercise?

What questions come to mind when you watch these videos?

Bell ringer 9/16 What norms (rules) should we work together in groups? What is good group going to look like? What is good group not going to look like? What is good group work going to sound like? What is good group not going to sound like? What is going to happen if someone does not follow your group’s norms?

What are we going to do? What are we Not going to do? What are we going to say? What are we not going to say?

Bell ringer 9/19 What changes occur in your body when you exercise? How can you measure these changes?

5 parameters to measure: Record normal skin color of hands and face (i.e. pale, pink, red, etc.) Record normal perspiration level (i.e. none, mild, medium, high) Record external body temperature by placing the thermometer on the forehead for 2 minute Record the resting heart rate using the carotid or radial pulse for 60 seconds Record the breathing rate by counting the number of breaths taken in 60 seconds https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gFYH7z5PVcQ

Rating of Perceived Exertion

Class Data Record the resting rates for each person the board You will need to complete the 6 & 8 minute trials as well as the resting period today. Then you will start making your graphs.

Bell ringer 9/21 What do you notice about the resting data for temperature? Why do you think that there is so little difference in the resting data while humans vary so much in other traits?   Partner #1 Partner #2 Group #1 98 100 Group #2 98.6 Group #3 100.4 Group #4 99 Group #5 96.8 Group #6 98.8 Group #7 95.0 99.1 Group #8 98.7 96 Group #9 95.6   Partner #1 Partner #2 Group #1 98 Group #2 98.6 Group #3 100 Group #4 96 Group #5 96.8 Group #6 98.1

Direct Relationship: It is also known as a positive relationship where both variables (x and y) move together, either increasing or decreasing Indirect Relationship: A negative relationship, occurs when both variables move in opposite directions (one increases and the other decreases)

Bell ringer 9/22 In each of the graphs identify the trend: Is it a direct or indirect relationship? As _________________________(the independent variable) increases, ________________________ (the dependent variable) (increases, decreases, stays the same) What is wrong with the graph? Graph B Graph A

Finishing the exercise lab On your graphs, identify where the set point is. (draw an arrow & label it) What in your body determines your set point? Does exercise change your set point? Why or why not? Make sure that you have answered all questions & followed instructions! Make sure that you have followed all the points of a good graph. (look at your note sheet!) This lab goes in the 90% grading category!

Bell ringer 9/23 Have one partner log into one of the lap tops right away. Put the title of the graph in the proper format. Identify independent & dependent variable. Trend? There will be a short check-in quiz at the end of the period!

Bell ringer-4th hour 9/26 You will have 5 minutes to finish your quiz from Friday. Remember the expectation is that you are in your seat getting to work right away. Failure to follow instructions will mean you are not completing the lab with us today.

Bell ringer 9/26 Create a title for this graph. What are the units for the dependent variable? What axis is the\ independent variable on?

Measuring - Volume

This curvature is called the meniscus. A characteristic of liquids in glass containers is that they curve at the edges. This curvature is called the meniscus. You measure the level at the horizontal center, or inside part of the meniscus (bottom). http://morrisonlabs.com/meniscus.htm

Set up egg lab with a partner Weigh Egg (scales are in the lab) Write weight on board Place egg in cup Add 150 mL of vinegar Add food coloring of choice Put names on container with tape Cover with plastic wrap and rubber band. Put cup in box top

Bell ringer 9/27 Using the angry birds what would I need to do to get the see-saw back into balance? In biology, what do we refer to balance as? Why is it important to be in balance? If you missed Friday’s class, you missed a quiz. You need to make it up today or Thursday.

Exit Quiz Answer on a separate sheet of paper: Looking at the graph, Is this a direct or indirect relationship? How can you tell? What should the correct title for the graph be?

Has a positive slope Has a negative slope Y is increasing at an increasing rate Y is increasing at a constant rate Y is increasing at a decresasing rate Y is decreasing at an increasing rate Y is decreasing at a constant rate Y is decreasing at a decreasing rate

Is there evidence to support your claim?
