Christians do believe in punishment for crimes (although many are against the death penalty and other violent punishments) but they also believe strongly in forgiveness. Christians are commanded by Jesus to care for the weak and prisoners. Some Christians visit prisons and work with the prisoners in accordance with the Parable of the Sheep and Goats (Matthew 25:31-46). 36 “I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me” 43 “I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.” LO: To examine Christian responses to the treatment of criminals

She was born in 1780 She was a prison reformer She was a Quaker She was shocked when she went to Newgate Prison and saw 300 women in a small room with no beds, their children with them! She started a prison school She provided items so the women could knit and sew to try and earn money In 1818 Elizabeth was asked to speak to parliament about prisoners and in 1823 a Gaol Act was passed to improve conditions for prisoners. A poor child caught poaching would be sent to Australia, a rich person would get a fine. She wrote a book about prison reform. Thanks to her, prisons became less awful places. She died in 1845. True or False? She was born in 1780? She was a famous criminal? She was a prison reformer? She was a Baptist? She was shocked when she went to Newgate Prison and saw 300 women in a small room with no beds? She started a hospital? She made the prisoners knit and sew so she could get rich off their products?
