Information Technology Careers Chapter 15 – Computers: Understanding Technology

Sales and Support Careers Technical servicing – installation and maintenance of hardware and software Technical support/help desk – responding to phone and email requests from customers Technical sales – educating potential customers about your product Technical training Technical writing – user manuals, training materials, and textbooks

Software Development Careers Programmer Software engineer – getting programmers to work together in an organized fashion Multimedia developer – graphic artists, digital sound editors, animation specialists Quality assurance (often also perform technical training, technical writing, or technical support functions)

Application Development Careers Software development is the creation of new software products whereas application development is the use of existing software to develop a system for a specific organization Systems analyst – determining the requirements and developing a design to meet the requirements (often are project managers for the systems they design)

Application Development Careers (cont.) Database administration – responsible for day-to-day operations of the database Network administration – operation and maintenance of company network and interactions with the internet Web Administration/webmaster – developing and maintaining a web site with multiple pages – more complex ones involve programming

Hardware Design Careers Specification of computer hardware such as cpu’s, video cards, and memory chips

College Degree Programs Computer science Computer engineering – hybrid of computer science and electrical engineering Computer information systems – applications oriented whereas computer science and computer engineering are more science oriented

Certificate Programs Intensive education courses followed by a standardized test which is often quite difficult Often training with a specific product Unclear how important they are hiring decisions Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA) – These certifications are not specific to a particular vendor’s hardware or software; A+ certification is best known Telecommunications Industry Association Certification – CTP certification is vendor-neutral
