UNH Cooperative Extension June 22, 2016 UNH Manchester STEM Docents UNH Cooperative Extension June 22, 2016 UNH Manchester Lara Welcome everyone and introductions

STEM Docents The Problem “New Hampshire K12 science and math achievement is not strong enough to supply future workforce demand” –NH Charitable Foundation, Smarter Pathways Initiative Lara As the world becomes more technologically advanced and scientifically complex, a science literate citizenry and work force is vital. In fact, national and state statistics show an increased demand for a more science literate workforce. One way to address this national need has been the development of new science and engineering K-12 education standards, the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). As New Hampshire STEM programs look to meet 21st century needs, both in-school and out-of-school programs are working to shift science curriculum to align with the new vision of NGSS. This new shift to the NGSS is a challenge for many STEM programs. There is a need for high-quality, K-12 STEM programs that are grounded in the NGSS framework. https://answerstomykid.com/

STEM Docents The Solution “If young students in the early years of their education are encouraged to practice creativity and hands-on learning within an integrated curriculum, then greater are the chances that more students will gain not only a fluency in STEM, but also embrace STEM as a career,” -Governor’s Task Force on K-12 STEM Education Lara How do you get students excited & engaged in STEM? Actively involve students in their learning; in doing science; aligns with NGSS expectations for content to be learned in conjunction with application of authentic science and engineering practices In this way the role of the teacher shifts to being a facilitator of learning

Developed by UNH Cooperative Extension STEM Docents The Solution STEM Docent Program Developed by UNH Cooperative Extension UNHCE staff trains volunteer Docents and educators in STEM NGSS- aligned, inquiry-based curriculum modules Docents are paired with classroom or out-of-school-time program Cohesive group of people who are: Energetic Passionate to share knowledge Life-long students Excited Kids-at-heart Willing to step out of your comfort zone Lara UNH Cooperative Extension will be launching the STEM Docent program during the 2016-2017 school year in the Manchester area. The STEM Docents program recruits volunteers that bring NGGS-aligned, student-active, project-based curriculum modules to classrooms or out-of-school-time program (3rd-8th grade). UNH Cooperative Extension STEM Docents are volunteers dedicated to strengthening youths’ appreciation and understanding of STEM. Docents may be teachers, educators, or industry members. Regardless of their background, Docents receive in-depth, ongoing training on inquiry-based, NGSS-aligned curriculum and how to deliver STEM activities to engage youth.
