Online LITERACY TEST Thursday October 20th Please check the lists in the office to find out where and when you will write the test.

Day of the Test Test will be run in TWO sessions. Students will write in the AM or PM sessions. The AM session will run from 9am -12 pm. The PM session will run from 12:10 to 3:10 pm. Check the list and find what session you are writing in and your room number in the main office. Arrive 15 minutes early. Set your alarm and eat a healthy meal before arriving at school.

Things to Remember During the Test There are two parts to the test. You have 75 minutes to write each part with a 15 minute break in between. Once the first 75 minutes are up, you will NOT have access to Part 1. You will have access only to Part 2 in the second 75 minutes. Read each question carefully and be sure to answer exactly what the question is asking. TYPE all of your answers in the space provided to make sure that they are scored – NOTHING written in the NOTEPAD will be scored.

Writing A News Report

News Report Why? When? What? How? Where? Who? Remember: On the OSSLT, you will be required to write a news report based on a picture and headline that is provided. Remember: There are six questions that your report will need to answer. What are they? Why? What? When? Where? How? Who?

Tips for Planning Read the headline and picture and decide on an event. Do not write: an advertisement a television or radio report a dialogue or a report about an event that will take place in the future 3. Do write: about an event that has occurred in the past in order to inform readers about the event

Tips for Writing a News Report Ensure the following: the response is related to the picture and headline the response contains sufficient and specific information and facts related to the event the response is written in the third person with a formal tone the grammar, spelling, punctuation, and sentence structure are correct response includes at least two quotations write the first three paragraphs in past tense and the final paragraph in future tense

News Report Structure 1. Create a PLACELINE 2. In the LEAD paragraph: provide a brief summary of WHAT has happened- include WHO it happened to, WHERE it happened, and WHEN it happened 3. In the second paragraph: give the reader the details- the HOW consider how the participants and/or bystanders reacted include one or two quotations (using quotation marks) from the people involved (what did they see? hear? etc.) 4. In the third paragraph: Tell the reader WHY the event took place and why it ended the way it did 5. In the concluding paragraph: provide finishing details including what might happen as a result in the future and/or how to get involved

Sample News Report MISSISSAUGA - For the past year, a group of students at Stephen Lewis SS have raised money for the Canadian Breast Cancer Society. This money was raised through the help of other family and friends who came out to fundraisers and walkathons the students held. “It is amazing to see young children in our community taking charge and creating events for such a good cause,” said a walker from the walkathon. With bright smiles on their faces, mothers, sisters, fathers, brothers, and grandparents came out to the walkathon in October and pledged money. The students raised $2,000 dollars at the event. The students were amazed to see how many community members came out the event. This event and their other fundraising efforts are really important to the group because many students and teachers have loved ones who have breast cancer, and the students want to support them. “We are so happy that our events have been so successful so far. The money will go to a good cause,” said the leader of the student group. The students hope to continue to raise money through the end of the school year.
