Pieta- Michaelangelo (1498-1499) This was the first of a number of works of the same style by Michaelangelo and is currently housed in St. Peter’s Basilica, Vatican City.

Michaelangelo Buonarroti (1475-1564) Michaelangelo was an apprentice to Ghirlandiao in 1488 at the age of 13. When he was only 14 years of age, Ghirlandaio had begun to pay him as an artist after being persuaded by Michaelangelo’s father which at the time was highly unusual. He was an Italian sculptor, painter, architect, poet, and engineer during the High Renaissance and was considered the greatest artist in his lifetime. He was the first Western artist whose biography was published while he was alive. He was often called II Divino or “the divine one” during his lifetime.

Sistine Chapel ceiling- Michaelangelo (1508-1512) This magnificent painting, The Creation of Adam, is housed on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel and was inspired by the Book of Genesis.
