European Explorers from various countries have now been given the opportunity to travel to the Americas. They have all come in search of a passage west to Asia, but along the way will discover new land, and come in contact with the Native People. Be sure to keep in mind which Native Tribes were located in the areas the Europeans are exploring. Who can recall which Native American groups developed where in North America?

Why was finding a direct route to Asia important to European countries?

Answer- Silk, spices, jewels, and riches from Asia were very valuable Answer- Silk, spices, jewels, and riches from Asia were very valuable. Europeans wanted to find a route so that they could get the goods directly and not have to pay tax from merchants. Similarly to how car dealerships get cars from the factory, then raise the prices for the customer. thus, they wanted to find a Northwest passage.

The Northwest Passage European explorers were still focused on their goal of finding a water route to Asia In the 1500’s and 1600’s, Explorers from England, France and the Netherlands came to the Americas in search of this passage Northwest Passage- A sea passage between the Atlantic and the Pacific along the north coast of North America

John Cabot Searched for the Northwest Passage for Italy in 1497. Landed on the coast of current day Newfoundland

Giovanni de Verrazano -In 1524, France hired an Italian, Giovanni de Verrazano to look for a northern route. Verrazano explored the coast of North America from present day Nova Scotia down to the Carolinas.

Jacques Cartier -In 1535 French explorer Jacques Cartier sailed up the St. Lawrence River, hoping it would lead to the Pacific. -Cartier did not make it to the Pacific, but he discovered the present day city of Montreal

Henry Hudson The Netherlands also wanted to find a passage through the America’s. The Dutch hired English sea explorer Henry Hudson to look for it In 1609, he discovered the river that now bears his name. Hudson sailed North on the Hudson River as far as present day Albany, New York

Group 2-How significant do u think Columbus’s voyages to America were in the course of world history? Why? Group 3-Do you think these voyages were successful despite their outcomes?

Closure Exploration of the Americas will continue to grow, and we will begin to see the development of European colonies in America as we move forward.

Homework Research one of the explorers we reviewed today, and write a one-paragraph biography on that explorer.
