#StandByMe Supporting Survivors Consultation Workshop

Introduction

What is the #StandByMe Campaign? http://youtu.be/q0JXOwNF6vY

Consultation This consultation is being launched by NUS Women’s Campaign. The aim of the consultation is to find out what policies and procedures Students’ Unions think should be in place to support students who are affected by sexual assault. The consultation is split into 5 different sections: * Policy * Reporting * Investigation and disciplinary procedures * Student Support * Training and further support

Policy

Policy What factors do you think must be included to make a policy effective for combatting sexual assault and rape? How do you think institutions and students’ unions can ensure that policies to do with sexual assault and rape are accessible to all students?

Policy Please tell us your opinions on having any of the following at your institution to help tackle sexual violence and support survivors of sexual violence Institutions and Students’ unions having a joint zero tolerance policy on sexual assault Clear definitions of sexual assault within policy. Consequences of perpetrating sexual assault to be outlined in student and staff codes of conduct Welfare policy listing potential reasonable adjustments for survivors

Safe Guarding Organisations who are responsible for services used by children, young adults and vulnerable adults (adults in need of community care services by reason of mental or other disability, age or illness) often have safe guarding polices to prevent and protect them from harm. Staff with safe guarding responsibilities are require to share on information to authorities if they believe the person that has reported an issue to them is in danger.

Safe Guarding What are your thoughts on the use of safeguarding policies to minimise the potential risk of perpetrators of sexual violence to other members of the institution? Pros Cons Alternative Ideas

Reporting

Reporting Systems Bad Reporting System Good Reporting System

Reporting systems Please tell us your opinions on having any of the following at your institution to help tackle sexual violence and support survivors of sexual violence Harassment advisor to support the student through the university reporting process and sign post them to getting access to relevant support services. Investigation and disciplinary procedure

Mind Map Activity: What do you think are the key factors of a good investigation process in regards to sexual assault cases?

Investigation and disciplinary Write down your opinions on having any of the following at our institution to help improve investigation procedures: An Independent Sexual Violence Advocate to support students take complaints forward. Information sharing between police centres and university (with consent of the survivor) Information sharing rape crisis centres and university (with consent of the survivor) Third Party Reporting, including by external agencies

Student Support

Any other thoughts? What measures could institutions and students’ unions have in place to ensure that: That retention (drop out) rates for student survivors aren’t affected? The academic attainment (grades/ success) of student survivors is not affected? Student survivors feel safe on campus grounds if the alleged perpetrator is also a student or a member of staff?

Mind Map Activity: What measures should we have in place to ensure that multiple support services are accessible to all victims of sexual violence?

Training and Support

Barriers to delivering support Potential Solutions
