A Journey Through The Psalms Wisdom From God A Journey Through The Psalms
Psalm 110: Dressed In Holy Array A Psalm of David Beautiful Messianic Psalm Exegeted by Jesus to be, in fact, a psalm of and involving David. Luke 20:42 – “For David himself says in the book of Psalms, ‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at my right hand, until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet.’”’
A Victory Psalm It is a psalm of victory which we need to understand. It speaks of the church of Christ and our role in the messianic kingdom. It is a song to rouse soldiers to action, sung about 1,000 years before the events to which it prophesies. A psalm in two simple stanzas.
The Lord’s Strong Scepter – v. 1-3 The Lord says to my Lord: “Sit at My right hand until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet.” The Lord will stretch forth Your strong scepter from Zion, saying, “Rule in the midst of Your enemies.” Your people will volunteer freely in the day of Your power; In holy array, from the womb of the dawn, Your youth are to You as the dew.”
The Strength Of The Lord’s Reign The Lord = Yahweh, said to my Lord = Adonai God the Father said to God the Son… God establishes the reign of Jesus over all His enemies – a footstool for His feet. “…stretch forth Your strong scepter from Zion….”
The Seated Lord “Sit at My right hand….” Right hand is the hand of power and authority. God establishes the eternal reign of Messiah. Sit… Sitting = reigning Sitting also equals fulfillment of purpose. Hebrews 1:3b – “When He had made purification of sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high….”
The Church in Holy Array Vs. 3 – “Your people will volunteer freely in the day of Your power….” Jesus made positive identification that the Lord in this psalm was Himself. The day of His power began with His resurrection from the dead and continues to this day. WE ARE THE VOLUNTEERS
The Dew Of Thy Youth “From the womb of the dawn, Your youth are to You as the dew….” Difficult Hebrew passage KJV, NKJV, ASV – “Thou hast the dew of Thy youth….” Which would indicate the eternal existence and tireless energy of our Lord.
Or… NASB, NIV, NRSV My preference in this case is the newer NIV “Your troops will be willing on your day of battle. Arrayed in holy splendor, your young men will come to you like dew from the morning’s womb.” Meaning fresh, plentiful, full of newborn hope and vitality!
In Holy Array What is this array? Order or dress? Ephesians 6:14-17 Belt of truth Breastplate of righteousness Boots of the preparation of the gospel Shield of faith Helmet of salvation Sword of the Spirit
What Else Is This Array? Isaiah 61:10 – “I delight greatly in the Lord; my soul rejoices in my God. For he has clothed me with garments of salvation and arrayed me in a robe of his righteousness, as a bridegroom adorns his head like a priest, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.”
And How About Galatians 3:27 “For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.” So, David foresaw an army of God, mighty and powerful, willing and able, dressed in brilliant armor, in righteousness, in holiness, in salvation and in Christ!
The Great Value Of Willing Volunteers 2 Timothy 2:3-4 – “Suffer hardship with me, as a good soldier of Christ Jesus. No soldier in active service entangles himself in the affairs of everyday life, so that he may please the one who enlisted him as a soldier.” Loyal, attentive, undivided allegiance to the Lord?
Luke 10:2 “And He was saying to them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore beseech the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest.” As willing volunteers we are the workers in the harvest.
II. The Lord’s Final Judgment –v. 4-7 “The Lord has sworn and will not change His mind, “You are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.” The Lord is at Your right hand; He will shatter kings in the day of His wrath. He will judge among the nations, He will fill them with corpses, He will shatter the chief men over a broad country. He will drink from the brook by the wayside; therefore He will lift up His head.”
Jesus As Priest and King The order of Melchizedek refers to Genesis 14:18 met with Abraham after the battle of the nine kings and the rescue of Lot and his family. Melchizedek = King of Righteousness From Salem = Peace Without beginning or ending (as far as his priesthood is concerned).
Conquering The World The Lord Messiah will shatter kings He will judge nations He will fill them with corpses He will shatter the chief men Complete annihilation of His enemies
Refreshing Drinks and Bright Eyes “He will drink from the brook by the wayside; therefore He will lift up His head.” Hebrews 12:3 – “For consider Him who has endured such hostility by sinners against Himself, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.”
Strength For The Fight Galatians 6:9 – “Let us not lose heart in doing good, for in due time we will reap if we do not grow weary.” Isaiah 40:28 – “Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth does not become weary or tired. His understanding is inscrutable.”
Strength Which God Supplies To Us 1 Peter 4:11 – “Whoever speaks, is to do so as one who is speaking the utterances of God; whoever serves is to do so as one who is serving by the strength which God supplies; so that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belongs the glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.” The only way we can lose is if we refuse to fight the good fight!
