Aim: How do we measure the mass, volume and density of a pebble, metal bar and cork? OBJ: Given abstract form, graph paper and notebook paper SWBAT measure the mass, volume and density of a pebble, metal bar and cork using a balance, ruler and graduated cylinder with 70% accuracy. DN: Hand-in iPad contract; take out white lined paper ACT: Write a college style lab report (including problem, hypothesis, materials, procedure, experimentation, results/conclusion, abstract). HW: Complete college style lab report on MVD of a pebble, cork and metal bar (due tomorrow). Study for Exam. 7th Grade: Lab Skills, 9/24; 8th Grade: Matter, 9/30

FINDING THE MASS Of the pebble, metal bar and cork (grams) Don’t forget to calibrate the balance !!!

←80 mL Density = Mass (TB balance) Volume (ruler, grad cylinder) Grad. Cylinder g/mL Ruler g/cm³ ←80 mL USE METRIC ONLY !!!!!! Used to find volume of: 1) pebble 2) cork Used to find volume of: 1) Metal bar

COLLEGE STYLE LAB REPORT Problem: State a question to be solved. Hypothesis: educated guess Materials: equipment used Procedure: Steps taken to solve problem. Experiment: data table, graph Results/Conclusion: What did you learn/discover? (See data table, graph) Does the graph show a direct, inverse, cyclic, static relationship? Abstract/Summary: Briefly explain . . . Why was lab done? State steps/experiments done. What did you find/learn/discover? (Be specific)

ABSTRACT FORM State three science concepts that you learned based on this lab: WRONG STATEMENTS 1. I learned about mass and how to calculate mass. 2. I learned about volume and how to find volume. 3. I learned about density and how to calculate density. CORRECT STATEMENTS: 1. I learned that mass is the amount of matter (atoms) in a substance and it is measured using a balance (unit: grams). 2. I learned that volume is the space an object occupies and for cubic/ rectangular solids we use a ruler where V = LxWxH; for irregular objects (cork, pebble) we use a graduated cylinder (water displacement method) to find volume. 3. I learned that density is the amount of mass divided by the amount of volume; it represents the internal atomic arrangement of atoms in a substance
