The Moment in History that Defines All History The Death and Resurrection of Jesus

Our Story Began with a Promise “I will put enmity between you and the woman and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.” -Genesis 3:15

Moving toward the moment “When the days drew near for him to be taken up, he set his face to go to Jerusalem.” -Luke 9:51

The Last Supper “And on the day of Unleavened Bread when they sacrificed the Passover lamb, His disciples said to Him ‘Where will you have us go and prepare for you to eat the Passover?” -Mark 14:12

The Last Supper “And on the day of Unleavened Bread when they sacrificed the Passover lamb, His disciples said to Him ‘Where will you have us go and prepare for you to eat the Passover?” -Mark 14:12 “Take, this is my body.” -Mark 14:22 “This is my blood of the Covenant, which is poured out for many.” –Mark 14:24

The Last Supper “And on the day of Unleavened Bread when they sacrificed the Passover lamb, His disciples said to Him ‘Where will you have us go and prepare for you to eat the Passover?” -Mark 14:12 “Take, this is my body.” -Mark 14:22 “This is my blood of the Covenant, which is poured out for many.” –Mark 14:24 “…and when I see the blood, I will pass over you…” -Exodus 12:13

The Last Supper “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” -Romans 6:23

The Agony at Gethsemane “Then Jesus went with them to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, ‘Sit here while I go over there and pray.” -Matthew 26:36 “While in the olive grove He said to them, ‘My soul is very sorrowful, even unto death.” -Matthew 26:38

The Agony at Gethsemane “My Father, if this cannot pass unless I drink it, your will be done.” -Matthew 26:42

Trial and Crucifixion

Trial and Crucifixion “So when they had gathered, Pilate said to them ‘Whom do you want me to release for you, Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?’…and they said ‘Barabbas!’ Pilate said to them, ‘Then what shall I do with Jesus, who is called Christ?’ They all said ‘Let him be crucified’…so when Pilate saw that he was gaining nothing, but rather that a riot was beginning, he took water and washed his hands before the crowd saying ‘I am innocent of this man’s blood. See you to it yourselves.’ And all the people answered ‘His blood be on us and on our children!’ Then he released Barabbas, and having scourged Jesus, delivered him to be crucified.” -Matthew 27:17-26

Trial and Crucifixion Mockery

Trial and Crucifixion Mockery Shame “And when they had mocked him, they stripped him of the robe and put his own clothes on him, and led him away to be crucified.” -Matthew 27:31

Trial and Crucifixion Mockery Shame Pain: “The unnatural position made every movement painful; the lacerated veins and crushed Tendons throbbed with incessant anguish; the wounds, inflamed by exposure, gradually gangrened; the arteries—especially at the head and stomach—became swollen and oppressed with surcharged blood; and while each variety of misery went on gradually increasing, there was added to them the intolerable pain of burning and raging thirst; and all these physical complications caused an internal excitement and anxiety, which made the prospect of death itself—of death, the awful, unknown enemy, at whose approach man usually shudders most—bear the aspect of a delicious and exquisite release.” -Frederick Farrar

Trial and Crucifixion Mockery Shame Pain Wrath: “And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, ‘Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?’ that is ‘My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” -Matthew 27:46

Trial and Crucifixion “It is finished.” -John 19:30 “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.” -Luke 23:46

The Resurrection “Why do you seek the living among the dead? He is not here, but has risen!” –Luke 24:5 “Then Jesus said to them ‘Do not be afraid, go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee, and there they will see me.” –Matthew 28:10 “For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive.” -1 Corinthians 15:22 “Because I live, you also will live.” –John 14:19

Why does it matter? Christ our Example: “…who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself….” -Philippians 2:6

Why does it matter? Christ our Example Christ our Substitute: “Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows.” -Isaiah 53:4 “For our sake, he made him to be sin, who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.” -2 Corinthians 5:21

Why does it matter? Christ our Example Christ our Substitute Christ our Victor: “He disarmed the rulers and authorities, and put them to open shame by triumphing over them in him.” -Colossians 2:15
