There are 5 major tactics that are used….

1. IMPORTANCE of the PAST The leader’s ability to connect to glories of the past. Reminding society about past glories and placing themselves in the same realm as socially accepted heroic figures that actually took part in these historically significant events, leaders can successfully elevate themselves to the level of these men, even though they had little or no connection at all.

2. ONE WITH SOCIETY The appearance that a leader is an equal member of society is a common theme highlighted in fascist and communist personality cult construction. . The ability to create an illusion of the ruler as a common man, representing the common man, instills a subconscious belief that his policies are implemented for the benefit of the people.

Hitler is seen wearing similar clothing, in the same pose and holding the same flag as the people behind him. By placing himself in pictures with many elements of Russian society (military, children, workers, etc.), Stalin appears to be in touch with their needs.

3. ACHIEVING A GOD LIKE STATUS As was previously discussed, communist and fascist leaders loved to touch on their "oneness with society." However, they simultaneously put themselves in a higher position than that of the masses. The people treated these men as infallible national deities, placed in such a high position of reverence, that they were impervious to political opposition. Challengers to their political legitimacy were eliminated by the simple fact that popular admiration and acceptance of their rule was so high, that an unknown political challenger had little chance of wrestling power away from such an untouchable national figure.

4. COMMITMENT TO THE FUTURE Leaders also looked for opportunities to express their commitment to the future. The leader appears invested in the happiness of the children, which is perceived by the electorate as the leader's commitment to the national and ideological longevity of the country.

5. ACHIEVEMENTS OF LEADERSHIP People want to know what rulers are accomplishing while in power. The leaders had to provide the public with a sense that national and ideological goals were actually being progressed and achieved under their rule
