STRESS & ANXIETY STRESS ANXIETY the reaction of the body and mind to everyday challenges and demands ANXIETY the condition of feeling uneasy or worried about what may happen You can experience both STRESS / ANXIETY during daily routines BUT each of these reactions can affect your physical, mental, emotional and social health.

STRESS & ANXIETY HOW MUCH stress / anxiety you feel depends on your perception of the event that causes the stress / anxiety. HOW you deal with stress / anxiety depends on your past experiences with the problem. POSITIVE stress / anxiety – EUSTRESS NEGATIVE stress / anxiety – DISTRESS STRESSOR – anything that causes stress / anxiety

STRESS & ANXIETY CAUSES biological environmental cognitive (thinking) personal behavior life situation

STRESS & ANXIETY When you perceive a situation or event to be stressful or a threat, your body begins a STRESS / ANXIETY RESPONSE. NERVOUS SYSTEM ENDOCRINE SYSTEM BODY’S RESPONSE ALARM – 1st stage body recognizes stress / anxiety RESISTANCE – 2nd stage “fight” or “flight” FATIGUE (EXHAUSTION) – 3rd stage occurs if stress / anxiety last too long become ill during this stage

STRESS & ANXIETY PHYSICAL EFFECTS MENTAL & EMOTIONAL EFFECTS headache asthma high blood pressure weakened immune system MENTAL & EMOTIONAL EFFECTS difficulty concentrating mood swings risks of substance abuse SOCIAL EFFECTS interferes with daily activities and relationships

STRESS & ANXIETY RESPONSE to stress depends on your PERSONALITY TYPE TYPE A PERSONALITY very productive difficulty relaxing strives for perfection driven by the clock TYPE B PERSONALITY very relaxed – somewhat carefree satisfied with lower output cooperative uncompetitive

STRESS & ANXIETY STRESS MANAGEMENT TECHNIQUES redirect your energy relax and laugh keep a positive outlook seek out support plan ahead get adequate sleep get regular physical activity eat nutritious foods avoid tobacco, alcohol and other drugs

ANGER & VIOLENCE VIOLENCE – the use of force to injure or abuse another person or damage property HOMICIDE –killing of another person SUICIDE – intentional self harm MOST acts of violence can be avoided IF the people involved can control their behaviors CAUSES OF VIOLENCE Anger Fear Peer pressure Substance Abuse Availability of Weapons
