Causes There are many causes for abusive and aggressive behaviour. It is important to be aware of these causes when working with children and it is important to be able to reduce the risk of harm by identifying these causes. Prevention and management There are many people in an education environment who can demonstrate abusive and aggressive behaviour (e.g. staff, pupils, parents, visitors). Any situation will have a consequence and/or an impact on the people involved, however the type and severity of these will depend on the severity of the initial behaviour. Next

Prevention and management It is therefore important to record and review all types of incidents in regards to abusive and aggressive behaviour. The reasons for this can be for preventative purposes as well as reactive purposes. In some circumstances this information may need to be used by other people such as senior management or even the police. Click the home icon to return to the homepage

Factors affecting behaviour The diagram below gives some examples of the different factors that can affect behaviour. Can you explain how each factor can contribute to abusive and aggressive behaviour?

Minimising risk To reduce the risk of reoccurring abusive and aggressive behaviour it is important to understand the cause of the behaviour in the first place. By considering both the cause of the incident and the incident itself, we can then come up with an appropriate method to prevent the incident reoccurring. Next

Minimising risk Make sure you consider the different types of abusive behaviour in schools too!

Referring behaviour Abusive and aggressive acts are sometime serious enough that they need referring. This is when the incident is reported to an appropriate figure/organisation. Most incidents in schools only need to be referred to the Headteacher. However there can be some acts which are very serious and the incident will need to be referred to an external agency such as the police, social services and the local authority.
