Adding Integers A.08

At 9 PM, the temperature was 5ᵒ below zero. By 1 AM, it dropped a whole 15ᵒ! By 10 AM, it had only risen 10ᵒ. I need it to be above freezing by 2 PM or I have to cancel my party!

My friend, the Number Line

Notes – Adding Integers Integers = positive or negative whole numbers For adding: If working together (both positive or both negative): Add and keep the sign If working against each other (one positive and one negative): Subtract and take the sign of the bigger number For subtracting: Change to addition and follow the above rules

Ex) 14 - 5 9 -5 + 14 9 -17 – 24 -17 + (-24) -41 24 +17 _ 41

1) -5 – 18 2) 8 – 14 3) 3 – 12 4) -5 – (-3) 5) -18 + 41 6) 9 +(-4) Practice 1) -5 – 18 2) 8 – 14 3) 3 – 12 4) -5 – (-3) 5) -18 + 41 6) 9 +(-4) -6 -23 -2 -9 5 23
