Quick Start Expectations Fill in planner and HWRS HW: p.44-51 #48-49 (Show your work! by writing out number sentences and changing the signs to addition. NO calculator!) On desk: Math journal & HWRS ready for stamping Warm Up: Copy and complete the two number sentences. Whose number sentence is correct? Why?

Notebook: 10/22/2014 AN 2.3 The + / - connection! How are the algorithms for addition and subtraction of integers related?

As you work today, look for ways that addition and subtraction are related.

Any addition expression can be rewritten as subtraction by subtracting the opposite of the number being added.

Any subtraction expression can be rewritten as addition by adding the opposite of the number being subtracted.

Adding Integers Remember the rules? Positive + Positive = Negative + Negative = Positive + Negative = Negative + Positive = Positive Negative Find the difference between the two numbers. Take the sign of the number with the greater absolute value.

Subtracting Integers Subtracting an integer is the same as: Adding its opposite Therefore, Subtracting a positive is the same as: Adding a negative Subtracting a negative is the same as: Adding a positive Then, just use the addition rules to solve!
