Coundon Primary School Together Everyone Achieves More

Coundon Primary School Together Everyone Achieves More Spelling is a developmental process. The stages through which children pass as they develop as spellers are the following: pre-communicative, pre-phonetic, phonetic, transitional, ‘correct‛.

Coundon Primary School Together Everyone Achieves More Our school expectation is that children will start the ‘Read Write Inc’ spelling programme in Year 2. Each child will have their own Practice Book to work in and will follow the programme which is run from the interactive whiteboard. Children will be taught 5 x 15 minutes spelling sessions per week in Year 2 Children in Key Stage 2 will receive between 3 and 5 x 15 minutes spelling sessions per week.

Coundon Primary School Together Everyone Achieves More There are different level Spelling Practice books which relate to the curriculum demands for each Year Group, i.e. Spelling Practice book 3 is aimed at Year 3 children. There are some books at the front if you would like to look through some of the activities.

Coundon Primary School Together Everyone Achieves More

Coundon Primary School Together Everyone Achieves More The Spelling Practice books have different activities designed to embed various spelling rules. Activities can be independent or partner work. Teachers can adapt activities. Children take ownership over their learning.

Coundon Primary School Together Everyone Achieves More The spelling objectives for Year 2, which work in conjunction with Phase 6 of the ‘Letters and Sounds’ document, ensure that children have knowledge and understanding of alternative spellings for each phoneme. ee, ea, ey, y ai, ay, a This knowledge is then built on as the children progress through school to Year 6.

Coundon Primary School Together Everyone Achieves More Learning and practising spelling (across the whole school) Children will develop different strategies for memorising high frequency (Tricky Words) or subject specific vocabulary. Syllables - To learn my word I can listen to how many syllables there are so I can break it into smaller bits to remember (e.g. Sep-tem-ber, ba-by) Base words - To learn my word I can find its base word, and then apply spelling rules. (e.g. Smiling – base smile +ing, e.g. women = wo + men) Analogy - To learn my word I can use words that I already know to help me (e.g. could: would, should) Mnemonics - To learn my word I can make up a sentence to help me remember it (e.g. could – O U Lucky Duck; people – people eat orange peel like elephants)

Coundon Primary School Together Everyone Achieves More Read Write Inc spellings is supported by an ‘online spelling planet’. Read Write Inc. Spelling is a 15-minutes-a-day programme covering all the spelling requirements of the National Curriculum 2014. Using a proven approach underpinned by phonics, the programme is for children in Years 2–6 (P3–7) and includes preparation for the statutory spelling assessments in England.

Coundon Primary School Together Everyone Achieves More

Coundon Primary School Together Everyone Achieves More Children often begin the week with a new spelling focus. We can now view a clip of Year 2 in action, learning their new spelling focus ‘y’.

Coundon Primary School Together Everyone Achieves More We ask the children to use letter names when spelling out words. In this clip next clip we can see the children practising their new spelling rule and using letter names.

Coundon Primary School Together Everyone Achieves More The Read Write Inc. spelling programme is taught through a variety of different methods, from teacher led learning, independent learning to partner work. We can now watch a clip of Year 2 doing some partner work.

Coundon Primary School Together Everyone Achieves More The children have spelling rules and patterns reinforced throughout their spelling lessons as well as their other lessons during the week. Dots and Dashes is one activity that helps the children think about the sounds in a word and what letters are being used to represent the sound

Coundon Primary School Together Everyone Achieves More We hope that you now have a better understanding of how your child is taught spellings at Coundon Primary School. Please feel free to come and have a look at the Spelling Practice books your children work in. Thank you
