JAHHS Student Dress Code

Why do we have a student dress code? The intent is to keep students safe and focused on academics. We want a productive, distraction-free educational environment. We recognize that the First Amendment to the Constitution respects a student’s right to choose his/her style of dress and appearance; however, vulgar, immodest, or disruptive personal appearances will not be allowed.

Why a dress code? High-school students are still learning good judgment and need some guidelines. A dress code helps students understand how to dress in a manner that is neat, clean, and appropriate for a learning environment.

Why change the current dress code? Students and staff members felt that it was important to have their opinions and ideas about the dress code heard. Clothing styles are changing constantly and it would be impossible to create a dress code that would be appropriate for an extended period of time. We were concerned about gender bias in the dress code.

How did we decide what to change? We invited staff members, students, and parents to meet to discuss the dress code and whether we needed to update it. The team consisted of 3 administrators, 18 staff members, 6 students, and 2 parents. The team met twice in May to discuss the code and to recommend changes. We looked at dress codes from other high schools.

How did we decide what to change? The recommended changes to the dress code were submitted to the whole faculty at a staff meeting in June. The faculty were then surveyed on each individual change and asked whether they would support it. At least 95% of the faculty indicated they supported the changes in the dress code.

New Dress code Students will be expected to dress for school in a manner that does not disrupt the instructional process and is conducive to a scholastic atmosphere. Students should take pride in the way they dress. At least nine standards will be maintained:

Dress code Footwear must be worn at all times. Bedroom slippers are not acceptable. No undergarments should be exposed at any time.

Dress code The torso must be covered at all times. (i.e., no halters, low-cut tops, unbuttoned shirts, cut-off shirts, backless shirts, etc.) No pajamas will be worn by students. Pants will be worn at waist level.

Dress code Shorts and skirts must be no shorter than the bottom of the fingertips with the arms hanging down. Tight-fitting leg coverings, such as leggings or jeggings, can be worn provided a fingertip-length top is also worn.

Dress code During school hours, students will not be allowed to wear head coverings while inside. Examples include hats, bandanas, scarves, doo rags, hoods, snoods, etc. Sunglasses should not cover the eyes inside the building.

Dress code No article of clothing or other items promoting death or violence or displaying vulgarity, profanity in any form or language, sexual innuendo, or gang-related activity will be worn by students. No items dealing with drugs or alcohol, or any other displays that may cause a disruption to the school program, will be allowed.

Dress code Non-essential clothing that might be used as a weapon is not permitted in school. Examples include spiked belts, wrist bands or gloves. Chains attached to the waist are not permitted. This includes chains attached to wallets, pockets, or belt loops.

Dress code Students will be sent home to alter their dress if necessary. Any such absences are unexcused and are counted in the 10-day rule. Repeated violations may result in detention, parent conference, restorative justice activities (such as school community service), or further actions, such as assignment to ISS or OSS.
