Instructional Objectives: Effective Team Membership & Leadership Pre-Course Assignment 1 of 2

Team Building/Effective Team Member Overview: The focus of the lesson is on being an effective team member and leader in an integrated, dynamic matrix environment to achieve mission results. Value: One of the key roles of a business advisor is to participate in or lead an effort that is being accomplished by a team of acquisition professionals. Becoming a high performing team requires commitment, interdependence, frequent communications, conflict management and collective focus. Each member must actively participate, contribute, and provide the necessary feedback to continually build the team’s synergy. Providing constructive written and verbal feedback is an essential element of building a high performing team. Learn. Perform. Succeed.

Assignment #1 Required Reading* Action: All students must participate in this assignment by reading: 1. Harvard Business Article: “Leadership That Gets Results” by Daniel Goleman.” Reference: Harvard Business Review March-April 2000 2. Excerpts from the Defense Systems Management College, “In Search of Effective Teams” by John Kelley. 3. Article entitled, “Characteristics of Effective Teams” These articles are housed in the CON 360 Blackboard under “Student Materials/Pre-course” *Note: There will be a quiz on these required pre-course readings early in the resident portion of the class. Learn. Perform. Succeed.

Written Assignment #1 Written Assignment – Being An Effective Team Member   Overview: This assignment is about identifying your role in supporting the mission and understanding your strengths and weaknesses as a member in a team setting. In order to be an effective leader or team member it is essential to develop your feedback skills and critical self-assessment. Giving and receiving constructive oral and written feedback to/from your team members will enhance your communication and leadership skills. Action: Through self-reflection and feedback from peers/supervisors, identify and explain both your strengths and weaknesses as a member of a team/group, as follows: Describe where you work and explain in detail what it is that you do to support the mission of your command organization. Do not recite your job functions, but rather consider what are the key attributes you bring to the job that contribute to mission success. What skills/characteristics are your strengths as team member? What skills/characteristics as a team member would you like to improve? Talk to Your Supervisor about your strengths and weaknesses as a team member. You may use the article “Characteristics of Effective Teams” as a reference source in your discussions with your supervisor. Document your discussion with your supervisor based on what he/she feels you do well and what do you need to improve. Deliverable: We expect, at a minimum, 4-complete paragraphs – 1 paragraph for each of the 4 questions. This is an individual assignment that you will complete in MS WORD and attach via the "browse" link in Blackboard using the following naming convention for your document: “last name first initial_teaming” (example: doej_teaming.doc)   Learn. Perform. Succeed.
