The “New” America

The Treaty of Paris Ended the Revolution after the Battle of Yorktown. Originally signed in November 1782, but the French were angry that they weren’t involved. The U.S. refused to accept the treaty until France and Spain could take part. Finally signed by everyone on September 3, 1783.

Main Points of the Treaty England recognizes the colonies as free and independent states. England will keep Canada, but will give up all lands from the colonies to the Mississippi River. All British troops will leave the U.S. Florida will be returned to Spain. France, Spain, England, and the U.S. will have access to the Mississippi River. Loyalists will keep their property and rights.

Patriot Reactions Overjoyed by their victory! Eager to see the British (and the British soldiers) leave. Excited to start their own country, with their own laws. Leaders like Franklin and Washington became heroes.

Challenges for Loyalists Loyalists were devastated by England’s defeat. Despite the Treaty, not all states respected the rights or property of Loyalists. Many were openly persecuted for being on the “wrong side” in the war. Thousands left the U.S. for Canada or England, hoping to start over.
