Baffles and Enclosures Rigid flat material used to extend the edges of a loudspeaker cone is calles “Baffle”. When a loudspeaker is mounted in a closed box with an opening in the front the box serves the purpose of infinite baffles because the waves from the back of the cone will not be able to come to the front side. Such a closed box is known as “Enclosure”.

Types : Finite Baffle Infinite Baffle Bass Reflex Horn enclosures Multiple entry horn

Finite Baffle The wooden cabinet as in radio receiver or T.V. receiver act as ‘Finite Baffle’. Such baffles, being of finite size, are not very effective and do cause some loss of low audio frequency signals due to diffraction.

Infinite Baffle Enclosures - Also called Flat Baffles, generally used with in-wall or ceiling mounted speakers, will provide front-to-back speaker isolation while using close to an infinite amount of air space as the enclosure.

Bass Reflex – Also called Vented Box Enclosures, are used when extended low frequency output is required. A port (vent) is added to an otherwise sealed enclosure and the port ID and length - together, create a Helmholtz resonance that reinforces the systems’ low frequency output.

Acoustic Labrynth For very low audio frequencies(16Hz to 50Hz), the ordinary bass reflex enclosure will have large dimension. To solve the difficulties the enclosure is divided into parts by several baffles forming ducts. This lengthens the path of wave coming out of the port and causes additional phase difference of 180 degree at very low audio frequency so that two waves meet in the same phase.

This ducted enclosure is Acoustic labrynth

Horn enclosures A horn loudspeaker is a speaker system using a horn to match the driver cone to the air. The horn structure itself does not amplify, but rather improves the coupling between the speaker driver and the air. Properly designed horns have the effect of making the speaker cone transfer more of the electrical energy in the voice coil into the air; in effect the driver appears to have higher efficiency

Multiple entry horn The multiple entry horn (also known as a coentrant horn, unity horn or synergy horn) uses several different drivers mounted on the horn at stepped distances from the horn's apex, where the high frequency driver is placed. Depending on implementation, this design offers an improvement in transient response as each of the drivers is aligned in phase and time and exits the same horn mouth.
