Internship/Residency Forum Specialty Forum Clinical Years Tips and Tricks

Internship & Residency Forum Held in October/November annually Traditionally consists of a panel of interns and residents from the Des Moines area (also DMU alumni) Typically represented specialties: OB/GYN, Surgery, Family Practice, Internal Medicine, and Pediatrics Historically: Discussion, dinner and Q&A concluded the evening. Addition this year: We are bringing in a nationally recognized speaker to talk about succeeding on boards and the residency match.

Medical Specialties Forum Annually in April Specialties included in the past: Anesthesiology, Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, Orthopedic Surgery, Ob/Gyn, Pediatrics, Emergency Med, Plastic Surgery, General Surgery, Dermatology Requirements, length of time, and work ethic of each specialty were discussed with both 1st and 2nd year D.O. Students.

Clinical Years Tips and Tricks Currently in the works. We hope to be having third and fourth year students come speak to the second year class (first years will be welcome as well). Speakers will outline the process of applying for various clinical sites, audition rotations, and also have a question and answer time for second years to ask any questions they may have concern rotations.

Winter Warmth Clothing Drive Adopt-A-School Program Community Medicine House of Mercy Senior Health Fair Catholic Charities

“Winter Warmth” Clothing drive Clothing collection begins mid-November each year throughout campus. Donations go to St. Mary’s Family Center of Des Moines, Iowa or DMU Homeless Camp Outreach Club Last few years several bags full of clothing and blankets were collected and donated.

Adopt-A-School Traditionally: Students go to a local school in Des Moines on Tuesdays and Thursdays to tutor middle school students in classes they struggle with, primarily in Math and Science courses. This is also an opportunity to build mentorships with students that come from a more diverse or economically-challenged home environment. - We are actively seeking for a new school to participate in this program as the original site has decided a different direction with their afterschool program.

Senior Health Fair: committee organized students to help with senior registration the morning of the event House of Mercy – this is a program to offer community service and educational resources to the House of Mercy Women’s Shelter and Resource Center.

Catholic Charities- Currently in the works. Idea is to host seminars to the general public (especially refugees and low socioeconomic members) on various topics of health: screening, prevention, nutrition, etc. This will directly benefit the medical education of our community while providing unique opportunities for our members to converse with a wide diversity.

Noontime Case Studies Betty Chu Award Peer Tutor Groups

Fall Semester (2016): Dr. Craig Clark is a cardiologist with the Iowa Heart Center in Des Moines a well as Associate Professor in the Department of Family and Internal Medicine at DMU. He presented a cardiology-related case, followed by a discussion regarding various routes you can take through Internal Medicine and Cardiology. Spring Semester (2017): Dr. Kaaren Olsen is a local women’s health provider as well as Assistant Professor in the Specialty Medicine Department at DMU. She presented an OB and Gyn-releated surgical case, followed by a Q&A to field questions about residency and the OB/ Gyn speciality.

Peer Tutoring Program SSP members host an exam review for the 1st year DO students before each of their tests in the Fall term A PowerPoint is prepared for each review with questions similar to what was experienced during the previous year on each test to help 1st years start to organize their lecture information and see different ways the material can be tested

Fund-raising Committee White Coat Ceremony Flower Sales Awards Committee Betty Chu is an annual award given to a first year medical student who is currently a mom in honor of a pass SSP member, Betty Chu, who is now deceased.
