Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement (MESA) Rev 7/16

What is MESA? MESA is changing the face of science, technology and engineering by creating and developing a new generation of STEM leaders. Our programs fuel diversity by propelling historically underrepresented groups towards STEM degrees and professional careers. We bridge classroom learning with real-world applications, and employ rigorous academics, leadership preparation, a peer community and collaborative problem-solving training to produce highly-skilled graduates who meet the STEM industry’s workforce needs.

The Need for MESA In California: An estimated 3 million college-educated workers will retire between 2005 and 2025. California has almost 900,000 STEM jobs, expected to increase to 1.1 million —or 19% —by 2018.

Science and math education California ranks 45th among all states in students taking advanced math & science courses 48th for eighth grade proficiency in math Last for fourth grade science proficiency (tied with Mississippi, Arizona and Hawaii) Statistics sources: #1: Challenges and Opportunities Facing California Higher Education in Science, Technology, and Career Education, Nancy Shulock, Institute for Higher Education Leadership & Policy, CCST, May 27, 2009. #2: Challenges and Opportunities Facing California Higher Education in Science, Technology, and Career Education, Nancy Shulock, Institute for Higher Education Leadership & Policy, CCST, May 27, 2009. #3: Nation’s Report Card: Grade 4 Public Schools, Science 2009, January 2011. California ranks 49th in students taking advanced science courses, and 48th for eighth grade proficiency in science and 35th among states in high school students taking advanced math courses.[1] [1] “State of Decline? Gaps in College Access and Achievement Call for Renewed Commitment to Educating Californians,” Policy Issue Report, Institute for Higher Education Leadership & Policy, October 2006 National Center for Education Statistics, California State Report card

Why California needs MESA: MESA works! Percentage of MESA vs. all California public high school grads who went to college immediately after graduation Statistics source: MESA data from National Student Clearinghouse. California data from College-Going Rates to Public Colleges and Universities: 2009, California Postsecondary Education Commission (latest study available), http://www.cpec.ca.gov/StudentData/CACGRCounty.asp?Year=2009 Only 6% of African American, Latino American and American Indian high school seniors in California are eligible to attend UC. [1] California statistics from “2003 University Eligibility Study,” California Postsecondary Education Commission, 2003. The study did not examine numbers for American Indian students but previous analyses indicate similarly low eligibility rates. Stats for 09-10

Why California needs MESA: MESA works! Destinations of MESA high school graduates 97% of MESA community college students transferred to four-year institutions as science, engineering or math majors. Statistics source: MESA Statewide Office Stats for 09-10

“After 40 years, MESA remains a model on how to ‘get it right’ for students in the fields of mathematics, engineering and science.“ Tom Torlakson State Superintendent of Public Instruction “MESA’s goals and objectives align very well with the focus of the SanDisk Foundation. We look forward to helping these determined and hardworking students continue their professional and personal development and grow into our next generation of tech leaders” Tom Baker San Disk Human Resources SVP
