IMPORTANT TO KNOW... As the force of the 1920’s depression also reached all walks of life, posters became a costly but well known prestige item which drew attention to a product. Many well known artists were not making money selling their work, so they turned to creating posters for companies during these lean financial times, thus reaching a wider audience because of their notoriety. This is a first form of celebrity endorsements. As a means of working through the depression, many designers mastered the technique of presenting a sales message with an immediate urgency. New designs featuring repetition of a theme or a slogan became very profitable and useful. It was during the depression that ingenuity gave birth to the modern commercial artists and ad agencies as we know them today.
