What happens next? Ask students what they remember about what happens after the crucifixion.

The Resurrection and Ascension Learning Objective: To understand why Christians believe Jesus resurrected and ascended. To explore the Biblical account of the resurrection and ascension. To interpret the Biblical story. To evaluate whether you think the resurrection happened.

The Resurrection Account As a class we are going to read the story of the resurrection and ascension from the book of Luke in the New Testament. As we are reading keep in mind our key question: Why do Christians believe in the resurrection and ascension of Jesus? Read aloud to the class and make sure they are following the text as you read.

The Resurrection Account What questions do you have about the account you have read?

Text Interpretation Group Talk: As a group you are going to discuss the questions you will be given. Be ready to share your ideas with others from the class. You have 3 questions to discuss and 1 written task. Group discussion and written task – e.g. on sugar paper

Choose one person from your group to visit a new group. Envoys Choose one person from your group to visit a new group. They need to find out what that group thinks about each of the questions and what they have chosen as their 5 key moments. You are then responsible for feeding back to your new group what you heard.

Did it really happen? Did he come back to life in the tomb? Who moved the stone? Did someone else die in his place? Class discussion. – Draw out that all 11 disciples eventually died for their belief – why would they do this if they made it up? Tradition holds that 11 of the Twelve Apostles were martyred. Peter, Andrew, and Philip were crucified; James the Greater and Thaddaeus fell to the sword; James the Lesser was beaten to death while praying for his attackers; Bartholomew was flayed alive and then crucified; Thomas and Matthew were speared; Matthias was stoned to death; and Simon was either crucified or sawed in half. John—the last survivor of the Twelve—likely died peaceably, possibly in Ephesus, around the year 100. Did the disciples make the story up?

Plus, minus, interesting What if the resurrection had been made up? In pairs students need to think of a plus, minus and interesting point. Share and discuss as a class. What would be a plus point? What would be a minus point? Something interesting

If Jesus had Instagram You need to create two images Jesus might have posted onto his Instagram account: On the day he resurrected On the day he ascended to heaven You also need to include a caption to go with each one. If you have time you could create a gallery of images and give erefs for the best ones.
