Information Flow Within a Dynamic System is COMPLEX The Problem We All Face For each group Assumptions Beliefs Goals Priorities Impact the information flow in ways that either Clarify or Constrain progress Information Flow Within a Dynamic System is COMPLEX

Our Context: New Leadership Priorities “Johnson says he’s embarking on a tour to meet with teachers, parents, students, and community leaders around the state to develop his “vision of action items.”

So….. What to do? GUIDE, and SUPPORT Do what’s best for STUDENTS …for those who TEACH them AND…for those who LEAD, GUIDE, and SUPPORT those teachers

Finding the right outputs to contribute to classroom outcomes: We, work with (whom)? Taking strategic action to improve (what)? So that (who)? Will better understand and be able to communicate to others about (what)? In order to build strength and success (where)?

Across the strata of public education, It comes together like this: Iteration We: Work with: Taking strategic action to improve: So that: Will better understand, and be able to communicate to others about: In order to build strength and success in the: 1 Classroom Teachers Teachers Student Learning Students Knowledge and skills required by the curriculum Classrooms 2 School Leadership Grade Chairs Committee Chairs Instructional Coaches Admin Tools for improving student learning Classroom Best Practices Leadership Data Communication Curriculum Initiatives Individual School 3 District Central Services Principals Literacy Coaches Teacher Leaders Tools and structures that support collaboration, communication and learning Strategic support processes Skills to support adult learning School District 4 District Leaders Central Services Departments District vision, tools and structures that support collaboration, communication and learning Central Services Departments District Vision District Goals Department District 5 State Education Agents Superintendents School Leaders Understanding of state initiatives, policy and statutory requirements All Educators The actions required to help all students become college and career ready State of North Carolina

We typically operate on this action path Iteration We: Work with: Taking strategic action to improve: So that: Will better understand, and be able to communicate to others about: In order to build strength and success in the: 1 Classroom Teachers Teachers Student Learning Students Knowledge and skills required by the curriculum Classrooms 2 School Leadership Grade Chairs Committee Chairs Instructional Coaches Admin Tools for improving student learning Classroom Best Practices Leadership Data Communication Curriculum Initiatives Individual School 3 District Central Services Principals Literacy Coaches Teacher Leaders Tools and structures that support collaboration, communication and learning Strategic support processes Skills to support adult learning School District 4 District Leaders Central Services Departments District vision, tools and structures that support collaboration, communication and learning Central Services Departments District Vision District Goals Department District 5 State Education Agents Superintendents School Leaders Understanding of state initiatives, policy and statutory requirements All Educators The actions required to help all students become college and career ready State of North Carolina

Problem of Practice Problem: Typically, NCDPI Professional Development offerings to principals are designed to address state agency priorities and goals, with both variance and redundancy across divisions. Principals have traditionally had a limited voice in what types of PD are offered by the state education agency, resulting in haphazard alignment of state-wide PD offerings to field-based needs. Need: To develop strategies for identifying state-wide professional learning priorities that align with State Board of Education goals and also consider the unique needs of targeted educators. District Leaders and Principals Curriculum Directors and Principals Teacher Leaders and Principals

Our Problem of Practice Alignment Seeks to Connect Across Strata Iteration We: Work with: Taking strategic action to improve: So that: Will better understand, and be able to communicate to others about: In order to build strength and success in the: 1 Classroom Teachers Teachers Student Learning Students Knowledge and skills required by the curriculum Classrooms 2 School Leadership Grade Chairs Committee Chairs Instructional Coaches Admin Tools for improving student learning Classroom Best Practices Leadership Data Communication Curriculum Initiatives Individual School 3 District Central Services Principals Literacy Coaches Teacher Leaders Tools and structures that support collaboration, communication and learning Strategic support processes Skills to support adult learning School District 4 District Leaders Central Services Departments District vision, tools and structures that support collaboration, communication and learning Central Services Departments District Vision District Goals Department District 5 State Education Agents Superintendents School Leaders Understanding of state initiatives, policy and statutory requirements All Educators The actions required to help all students become college and career ready State of North Carolina
